Chapter 9: The Link

You have some explaining to do, Maya. Dave says. Before she could answer, Raina came to the place running. “Are you okay, Dave?” Raina shows concern. “Yes, I am,” answers Dave. “How did you find us?” “When you collided with Argus, your power leaks were caught by our detectors.” Raina said to him. “Power leaks? What the hell is that?” Raina replies to him- “When two powerful people fight, some fragment of their power leaks through their actions. When their fists smash against each other or someone hits another, their power leaks. It is like some invisible aura, or you can say, “radiation.” “I see,” affirms Dave. Maya looks at Raina and asks bitterly, “Why are you late if you are always on his ass? He could have died.” “He wouldn’t. He is stronger than Argus; I know that.” Raina said that while patting Dave’s chest. Maya kept looking in temper. Dave shrugged off and asked Maya, “What was that? How did you heal yourself?” Maya replies, “I have had this power since that light touched me. I am a powered person too.” Dave kept speaking “That is a very useful power, more useful than my average strength upgrade.” Raina interrupted, “Power limit works in a very strange way. And you have not reached your full potential yet.” “What do you mean?” both Maya and Dave asked together. “Everyone starts their power journey from basic advancements but reaches a higher level through hard work and sheer willpower. Maya, I thought you already knew this from your years of research.” She smirked. “I had a feeling about this, but I did not have enough evidence to prove it. So the gov, Maya, has already found out the secrets of the powers,” Maya remarks. “Actually not. We know some things but have a lot more to learn. And I hope you help us with your findings as well, Maya,” says Raina. “I do not trust you a bit, nor do I trust the bureau. I will give you my findings when I really find out what you guys are actually after. Is it actually people's safety or power grabbing and asserting dominance as a “Your wish.” Raina replied. Then again, Dave asked Maya, “Why did you hide it from me? OH wait... Did you actually heal me with your powers when I was in the hospital? Then your power is already very much developed.” “Yes and no. How can I explain it in simpler terms? I can heal others but not as much. I can recover from minimal damages or bruises, or if given time, a little more serious diseases. But I cannot heal someone completely; I cannot cure chronic diseases or those people who are about to die. I think I could heal you faster because you too are a powered person and have healing factors.” “I see,” Dave said. Maya continued, “And I hid it from you because I thought you would see me with different shades, because you were confused too with your own powers and did not want to show it to people.” “It’s nothing like that. This power of yours is really promising. And thank you for saving me again.” Raina said, go somewhere and have a chat. We need to be in this together. Without my help, you guys will be in forever danger.” “How many people like this are there in this world?” Dave exclaimed. “Not sure, but we already have seen plenty. Many don't come up to public, but which ones create messes and commits crime, we eliminate them as soon as possible. Only Argus have slipped through our palms till now.” All three of them go to Maya’s place and brainstorm the entire night. With their research combined, they suspected that people got powers similar to their nature or profession. Raina said, “Dave is a construction worker, so he got the strength and can see structural weak spots. And Maya can heal because she is a nurse.” “This all makes sense now.” Dave says, “But why us? There are many nurses and construction workers.” “That we still have to figure out,” says Maya. Raina asks, “Let us check the stone which you found at the ruins.” All of them check the stone, which had a symbol on it, which looked like some kind of face. “There are two symbols I’ve seen till now. One ofa greenish tint and another seemed a liite bit red. I have tried to gather information about these. These symbols can be found in many ancient ruins. And nobody ever found the meaning of this.” maya says. Raina adds, “Argus knew about this stone. That's why he was there. This must be something important related to your powers. Give it to me; we will keep it safe.” “Don’t give it to her; I don’t trust them yet,” says Maya in a sharp tone. “Come on, don’t be rude, Maya. Even if we keep this thing with us, we will not be able to protect it if some group attacks us. I can’t let you be in danger for this,” Dave says politely. Maya looks at him with eager eyes and says, “But, but, but…” and finally agrees with him to give it to Raina. “So what was argus’s power? Throwing knife?” Dave asks curiously. “He controls sharp objects. He can manipulate sharp objects like swords, needles, or even bullets. That's why we need your help stopping him. Even our best snipers are unable to do anything to him. You have already injured him, it seems.” She continues, “And Maya, you will be part of a different squad. You will work with both the researchers and the medics. We definitely need someone like you.” “Did I say I will join?” Maya asks with a frown. “I know you are a kind person, Maya. Don't you want to help people? Don't you want to help Dave when he is injured from a battle?” Raina says to her gracefully. Maya stays silent for some time and looks at Dave with an assertive glance. Dave shows a heroic smile on his face and says, “I do not have any choice, eh? So the adventure begins.”
