Chapter 2 The Awakening

(POV Cynthia) The cold was unforgiving. It didn't just bite at my skin; it seeped into my marrow, freezing my blood from the inside out. Within hours of leaving the pack borders, the blizzard had soaked entirely through my thin silk dress. Ice clung heavily to my eyelashes, and my bare feet were completely numb, leaving a trail of frozen blood in the deep snow. Every step was a brutal battle against the screaming wind. Just a little further. Don't stop. If you stop, you die. Through the blinding whiteout of the storm, massive stone pillars loomed ahead. The abandoned Moon Temple. It was half-buried in the snow, a colossal relic from the ancient Lycan era, long forgotten by modern packs. My vision blurred, the edges of the world turning a fuzzy, comforting black. My lungs burned with every shallow breath. As my foot hit the first massive stone step of the temple, my legs finally surrendered. I collapsed forward into the freezing snow, waiting for the inevitable darkness to claim me. But then, the wind simply... stopped. A shadow, darker than the night itself, eclipsed the snow. I forced my heavy eyelids open. Standing over me was a beast straight out of a nightmare. A massive, pure black Lycan, twice the size of a normal Alpha wolf. Its fur absorbed the ambient light, and its eyes glowed a terrifying, predatory crimson. The scent of pine, winter storms, and raw, ancient power wrapped around me, so thick I could taste it on my tongue. My dormant wolf, weak, battered, and bleeding from the rejection, suddenly surged forward with a jolt of electricity. She let out a soft, longing whimper in my mind. Mate. The Lycan lowered its massive, terrifying head. Its hot breath brushed against my freezing cheek, sending a shiver down my spine that had nothing to do with the cold. Before the darkness dragged me under completely, a single, deep voice reverberated through my skull like a war drum. "Mine." Warmth. The crackle of a roaring fire. And that same intoxicating scent that made my inner wolf claw frantically at my ribs. My eyes snapped open. I wasn't dying in the snow anymore. I was lying on a massive stone bed layered with thick, heavy furs. The high, ruined arches of the Moon Temple stretched high above me, but the biting wind was completely blocked by a massive fire roaring in an ancient hearth. "Drink." The voice was a low, dark rumble that vibrated through the stone floor and straight into my bones. I bolted upright, instinctively pulling the heavy black fur cloak up to my chin. Standing near the fire was a man who looked like he had been carved from granite and violence. He was impossibly tall, his bare chest heavily scarred and corded with lethal muscle. But it was the intricate, black tribal tattoo spreading over his heart that made my breath hitch. The Royal Lycan Mark. "You..." My voice cracked, throat raw. "You're the beast from the snow." He turned slowly, the flickering firelight catching his sharp, aristocratic jawline and those piercing crimson eyes. "I am Xanthus." Xanthus. The Lycan King of the North. The ancient tyrant every Alpha used in ghost stories to scare their pups into obedience. Legend said he had died a century ago in the Great War. Yet here he was, staring at me with an intensity that made my skin flush hot. He walked toward me, his movements fluid, dangerously predatory. He handed me a wooden cup filled with warm, metallic-smelling broth. "Drink it. Your blood is completely drained. You shouldn't even be alive right now." My fingers brushed his when I took the cup. A jolt of electricity—pure, undeniable sparks—shot up my arm. My breath caught in my throat. He felt it too; his pupils dilated until his eyes were almost entirely black, and a muscle ticked in his jaw as he forced himself to take a step back, giving me space. "Drained?" I whispered, looking down at my pale, trembling hands. "Your aura," Xanthus said, his gaze dropping to the empty space on my neck where Leon's mate mark should have been. "You are a Healer Wolf. A pureblood White Wolf. It is the rarest bloodline to exist. But your inner wolf has been starved for a decade because someone has been siphoning your energy." The wooden cup slipped from my numb fingers, spilling the warm broth onto the furs. Siphoned. Suddenly, the last ten years of my miserable life made terrifying, crystal-clear sense. Leon was known as a prodigy, hailed as the strongest Alpha the Warwick Pack had seen in a century. But he wasn't born strong. Every time he fought, every time he miraculously healed from fatal wounds on the battlefield, I would fall terribly ill for days, bedridden with agonizing fevers. I thought I was just weak. I thought my wolf was broken. He was feeding off me. The mate bond hadn't been a romantic connection; it had been a parasite attaching itself to a host. "The moment the bond snapped," Xanthus continued, his voice dangerously soft, "the leech detached. And your true power woke up." As if responding directly to his words, the heavy storm clouds outside the ruined temple parted. A brilliant beam of pure, unfiltered moonlight pierced through the broken roof, bathing me in silver light. Warmth bloomed in my chest. Not the feverish heat of sickness, but a surging, raw, unadulterated power. My bones began to c***k—a sudden, blinding rush of pain that instantly melted into absolute euphoria. For the first time in my life, the shift took over. I fell to my hands and knees, my skin rippling uncontrollably. Fur sprouted, bright and glowing in the moonlight. Within seconds, I wasn't a broken, rejected girl anymore. I was a wolf. A pure, blindingly white she-wolf. I let out a howl—a sound of absolute freedom that echoed off the ancient stones, carrying far into the northern night. Xanthus watched me, his crimson eyes blazing with a primal hunger. A deep, earth-shaking growl tore from his throat. Before my eyes, his form shifted, expanding rapidly, bones snapping until the massive black Lycan from the snowstorm stood before me. He was terrifying, built for s*******r, an absolute god among wolves. I braced myself, my instincts screaming that I was in the presence of an apex predator. But the Lycan didn't bare his teeth. Instead, he took a slow, deliberate step forward. Then, the ancient tyrant, the monster of the North, lowered his massive head. His front legs bent, and he bowed to me. Absolute submission. He shifted back into his human form, kneeling naked before me on the cold stone floor. His large, calloused hand reached out, gently burying his fingers into my pristine white fur. "You belong to the North now, little moon," he murmured, his thumb brushing against my jaw. "And no one will ever hurt you again." ---
