What really amazes me is that the two people I most expected to push me from the balcony outside the lantern room of the Thorpe Island Lighthouse were instead staring up at me as I fell, genuine horror contorting their faces. It’s a great view from up top, almost all the island is visible; trees, sand and rock mostly, with the addition of three 150-year-old and suitably rickety lighthouse keeper’s cottages built in the centre clearing.
