Sapphire's eyes danced with emotions as she admired her wedding gown.
It's the wedding eve today, and tomorrow, she's gonna change from Smith to DeVille. Excited, nervous, and silently wishing things don't go wrong.
She spent the whole day with Alyssa and decided to spend the night in her room, admiring her things one last time.
She took the gown to her nose and dragged in a long breath, the soft flowery scent flooding her nerves.
Closing the wardrobe, she jumped on the bed and cross-legged.
Fishing her phone from under the pillow, she opened her voice chat with Wilson.
"I can't wait for you to become mine."
She blushed hard, speaking into the camera.
"Me too. I. Love. You." She typed and sent it, watching the marks tick two.
Excitement bubbled in her chest, knowing he's online.
She waited.
One.
Two.
No reply.
Her smile faltered a bit, but she forced it back, understanding the reason behind it.
Wilson is a workaholic.
A text notification popped up.
With heavy excitement, thinking it was Wilson's, she clicked it without waiting to check.
"Yeah... right there... destroy that pussy... It's all yours. f*****g yours!"
The phone slipped from her hand, her brows etching in confusion as her ears recognized the voice.
"You feel that, b***h?"
Sapphire picked up the phone and looked at the sender.
She heaved a tired sigh, seeing the sender details.
Alyssa.
"That's Wilson eating your damn pussy."
The video ended, and Sapphire dialed her number.
"What do I do with you?"
"You can thank me for sending you a perfect clip of me fucking."
From the background, Sapphire could hear the sound of skin slapping and heavy breaths exchanging.
"You shot this now?"
"When else... yeah... you ain't a complete badass, so I'm only giving you my—"
Sapphire hung up before she could complete her filthy statement, smiles blooming all over her face.
Before the smiles could last, another text came, this time from greedy Dad.
"Make sure nothing happens tomorrow. The wedding must happen at all costs."
She kept her phone on the bedside table and lay on the bed.
Pulling the duvet over her chest, she closed her eyes, trying to catch some sleep, but her heart refused to slow down.
Thinking it was because of the wedding, she noticed her hands trembling under the duvet.
"Tomorrow should just get over."

[MORNING, GRACE CATHEDRAL]
Months after planning, the awaited day had arrived. New bonds would be formed, families would grow stronger, and businesses would strengthen. In the business world, weddings aren't only for the union of lovers, but the coming together of two companies to grow stronger, and in this case, the DeVilles and Smiths were hours away from forming the biggest alliance in the business world.
A black BMW decorated with balloons and flowers was parked miles away. The bride's family's car.
"Are you nervous?" Theresa Smith asked, arranging Sapphire's hair.
"I'm fine," Sapphire mumbled, staring outside the window.
They were currently occupying the third parking space.
Like every other businessman's wedding, most weddings aren't about love. It's all about business. Politics. The gains.
She could see so many business associates of Wilson's, her father's associates, and more people whom she was sure came to find their way into the DeVilles' good books.
Alyssa nudged her back to the present. "Can't wait to see your fiancé? Mm?"
"Don't blame me if you can't find your mouth one day."
"What? You mean the video?" Alyssa feigned innocence. "You are blessed with an amazing friend like me who would give you her free s*x video rather than allow you—"
"Gosh, Lys, we're at the church, for God's sake."
"Now you're seeing what I go through," Sapphire replied.
"What?" Alyssa shrugged, leaning close to Sapphire's ear. "I've prepared the perfect gift for you."
Sapphire faced her. "It's strange, but I don't wanna think 'bout it. You're not normal. Anything from you is always off."
Alyssa hushed her up. "Don't talk about it when it hasn't arrived."
"Mom, where's Dad?" Sapphire asked.
"He's making sure he gets that contract. You know how he is," Theresa replied, her eyes travelling over Sapphire's shoulder.
"The groom's family has arrived."
Both girls followed her gaze.
"Wow, Tracy is lit," Alyssa complimented absentmindedly.
"Were you gonna expect less? She's a DeVille," Sapphire replied, watching the three family members go inside.
"I'm a Gifford, but I can look lit if I want."
"No one is forcing you."
"It's time to go in, you two."
Sapphire looked around the place, trying to see if she'd spot her father, but there was no sign of him.
"Father isn't here yet."
"You aren't gonna let the old man stall your wedding," Alyssa replied, doing a quick touch-up on Sapphire's gown. "If it's for walking you down the altar, I'll gladly do it. The man might be trying to seal a deal with Old Marco."
"Old Marco arrived before the rest of the family members," Theresa said.
"Then, he's stranded. Ion know," Alyssa said, making sure to keep the energy alive.
Sapphire's face fell, but she managed to wear a smile as they all got down from the car.
Theresa pulled the veil down over her face, while Alyssa handed her the bouquet.
"Go make yourself Wilson's," Alyssa whispered, holding Sapphire by the hand.
Sapphire flashed her mom a smile, the three of them walking into the church.
Theresa walked up to Old Marco, and after exchanging some pleasantries, she went to the rest of the family members.
"Where is your husband?" Mrs. DeVille asked.
Theresa gulped, forcing a smile back on. "He's attending to something."
"A man who isn't present at his daughter's wedding," Tracy scoffed, checking her manicured nails. "What a joke of a wedding."
"Tracy," Mr. DeVille cautioned. "Manners."
Tracy rolled her eyes and fixed them on the couple at the altar.
Alyssa had that sweet smile as she released Sapphire's hand.
"Don't you dare think of putting on a sad face," she murmured into Sapphire's ear before going back to her seat.
Sapphire nodded, a bright smile appearing on her face as she saw Wilson's face up close.
Her heart skipped countless beats, different waves of excitement and emotions swirling within her.
"You look so beautiful," Wilson leaned in and whispered, drawing out the blush she'd been trying to keep in.
"Thank you," she whispered back.
Immediately, the lights dimmed for the guests. The only visible people were Sapphire, Wilson, and the priest officiating the marriage. The dimmed light gave off a fairy-tale wedding, and Sapphire grew ten times happier. Her father's absence disappeared from her mind.
"Did you do this?" she asked.
"I know how much you love the fairy-tale princess wedding."
Redness flooded Sapphire's cheeks. Thankfully for the veil.
"Priest?" Wilson noticed the priest hadn't started officiating the wedding.
"Old Marco's orders," the priest answered, holding the Bible.
"Old..." Wilson trailed off, his eyes searching for Marco.
The door creaked open, and the shadow of someone reflected at the door.
Everybody's eyes went to the door, following the man until he took a chair at the back.
Wilson's eyes went back to Old Marco, and he could see the old man giving the priest the sign to start the wedding.
His brain clicked, and he squinted through the dimmed light. He knew. No one else could make Old Marco delay the wedding except Tristan.
Sapphire's eyes were also on the man, and it was the voice of the priest that called her back.
He cleared his throat. "Does anyone have a strong reason why this couple shouldn't be together?"
Silence.
--
"By the holy matrimony and the power vested in me, I now pronounce you both husband and wife."
"You may now kiss your bride."
Sapphire's heart skipped. Threads of sweat appeared on her forehead beneath the veil that suddenly felt too suffocating. The bouquet started trembling in her hand.
Alyssa's stomach dropped. For the first time since today, worry and fear were written on her face.
Theresa's face went cold, her eyes flashing with sadness.
Wilson began lifting the veil.
Sapphire's heart raced at an abnormal rate. The church suddenly closed in on her. Her breath grew heavy when the veil completely left her face.
Her eyes met Wilson's.
He came closer to her. Her face turned pale, and her breathing increased.
The whispers in the hall caught her attention.
"Kiss her already!"
"Why is she looking like that?"
"Does she have a mouth disease? She looks scared."
Everyone's attention was now on them, even the ones who came specifically for the connections and initially acted nonchalant.
"I understand," Wilson whispered, flashing her an 'I got this' smile.
"Thank you for making me a part of your life," he smiled, then faced the guests, still wearing that warm smile. "We'll skip the kissing part."
Gasps broke out.
He didn't let it get to him. "My wifey here is a shy one. Don't let her face deceive you. She's shy in public, but behind the door—" he winked. "If you know what I mean."
"That's more like it!" Alyssa stood, jamming her hands together.
Soon, everybody joined her, commending the lovely words and the newlyweds.
"Thank you," Sapphire said, elated.
"It's my duty to protect you from now on."
Rose petals fell on the couple, more people clapping for them, with Alyssa's voice seeming to be the loudest.
Sapphire smiled, her love for Wilson doubling with how he handled the situation perfectly.
She saw the proud look on her mom's face, the crazy look on Alyssa's face, but nowhere could her dad be found.
She felt somebody's gaze on her. Not soft, neither normal. It was deep. She wished to ignore it, but her eyes passed through the thousands of people sitting, thousands of smiling faces, going straight to the back.
Through the dimmed light, her eyes met the gaze. Deep blue eyes that didn't need to announce themselves before getting noticed.
