Rainbow Island was in the center of the world. My breath caught as I caught my first glimpse of it. It looked like paradise. There was definitely more than one reason it was called Rainbow Island. Everywhere you looked there was an explosion of colors. Flying over, it looked like there where neighborhoods dedicated to each color, surrounding a central palace that gave off an iridescent gleam. The Island was almost circular in shape, except it had T shaped points around the perimeter, 4 at the directional points that were part of the original infrastructure, according to Grace. In between these points there were 4 more T’s, 2 were extended beyond the original points, and 2 that were indented. We circled the Island once before heading toward one of the extended points.
Grace explained that the extended points were the air port and the sea port, and they were extended during the last Rainbow’s time. The indented points were the commerce meccas of the Island. She might have gone on a historical tangent but I couldn’t concentrate on her words, I was too overwhelmed with everything I saw. So many colors, after everything being black, white, and brown at the school it was hard not to be overwhelmed.
Cal pulled at my arm and pointed at a crumbling building out the window, “I wonder what that used to be. Wouldn’t it be fun to go explore ruins like that?”
I nodded and then looked over at Todd. He was listening intently to Grace, so I smiled and decided to let him be.
We were escorted through the airport and into a couple of vehicles that drove us inland. We passed through the blue neighborhood where everyone was a color, and not just blue. Even the little kids all had a distinct Color to their hair. People were interacting with each other no matter their hair color. I was amazed. Grace took the liberty to tell us a brief history about the island and the inhabitants. She told us how Rainbow Terrance had built the island and brought his rainbow here, and since, everyone here was either born on the island or brought in as part of the RCT. “The RCT is more of a security force most of the time. " Grace explained, “That’s why there are more Reds than any other color. But who knows, you could change that.”
“Welcome to The Rainbow Connection Central Command.” Grace said as we exited the car at the mansion in the middle of the island.
“That’s a mouthful.” Cal mumbled. Todd and I snickered.
The outside walls were painted with various swirls and waves of color, all of them blending together when they touched, with a pearlescent sheen, creating a truly beautiful sight. Stain glass windows making intricate and detailed patterns and pictures. A huge balcony that could host an entire party easily on the left side of the massive building. The front door was made of mahogany and carved with various intricate and elaborate details that were filled in with variously colored gemstones, making it obvious this place was NOT cheap to build and most likely impossible to buy for more than one reason. I lean into Todd, “More like Rainbow Palace!” I whisper, stunned by the building in front of us. He chuckled.
“Or, as we like to call it, Home.” A graceful older man descended the steps. He did have white hair, but the kind that came with age, and he was wearing a silver suit, the kind that was worn and creased with age, a rainbow sash going over his shoulder. He approached me, and instead of shaking my hand he took me by the shoulders and gave me a warm and appraising look. “It is good to see you. I have grown very tired.”
After my confused look, he sighed, “I am Rainbow Jedediah, Jed for short.”
“How is that possible?” Todd stepped forward, “Rainbows don’t come along that often.”
“True, hence why I am tired. I will explain, but first you all must be hungry after that long flight.” Jed led us into the mansion. The main hall was absolutely impressive. It was so stunningly beautiful that it was almost intimidating. The walls were made of marble and had pillars connecting to arches every 15 feet, the arches and pillars decorated in carvings, gold detailing, and almost see-through ribbons of each rainbow color. The floors were just as impressive, made of glimmering quartz with opalescent shine when the light from the windows hit just right. The ceiling was at least around 35 to 40 feet above us with domes of vibrant stain glass that made blurry and hypnotically colorful patters on the quartz floor. I caught brief glances at rooms with open doors that we passed. The doors were made of mahogany and carved with different patterns, the doorways being arches like the ones in the hall, but made out of different material, each one representing the room behind them in color. Each room was decorated in its own style. Some were ornate and others simple, there seemed to little rhyme or reason to so many styles.
Jed had dismissed our entourage, except for Grace. I whispered to her, “Why does the house seem so…” I mushed my hands together unable to come up with the right word.
Jed answered, “So many Rainbows. Each has styled at least one room. Just because we have the same job, does not mean we have the same tastes.” he shuddered as we passed a neon room, I did too, looking away before I was blinded by the contrasting and sickeningly vibrant colors. I wasn’t ready to look at that before having proper sleep and possibly caffeine first. “You are more than welcome to redecorate, after we leave of course.” Jed winked at me.
