Chapter 5: The Lavender Blooms Again

337 Words
The morning Clara woke to find Julien’s reply, the lavender fields were bathed in golden light. Dew clung to the petals like tiny jewels, and the air was thick with the scent of new beginnings. She stepped onto the porch, heart fluttering. A single envelope sat on the railing, tucked beneath a sprig of fresh lavender. Her name was written in Julien’s familiar hand. She opened it slowly. “Clara, I read your letter beneath the oak tree. I cried. I smiled. I remembered everything. I don’t know what the future holds either. But I know I want to face it with you. If you’re staying, I’m staying. —Julien” Clara pressed the letter to her chest, tears slipping down her cheeks. She didn’t need Geneva. She didn’t need Lyon. She needed this—sunlight, soil, lavender, and love. That afternoon, she walked to the vineyard. Julien was pruning vines, his shirt damp with sweat, his smile wide when he saw her. “I’m staying,” she said. He dropped the shears and pulled her into his arms. They spent the next weeks rebuilding. Clara transformed her mother’s farmhouse into a botanical research centre, inviting students and scientists to study the healing properties of lavender. Julien expanded the vineyard, experimenting with blends and techniques inspired by Clara’s knowledge. They planted new rows together—lavender and grapevines side by side. The village buzzed with excitement, and the scent of blossoms filled the air. One evening, beneath the oak tree, Julien knelt and offered Clara a ring carved from olive wood, simple and beautiful. “I don’t need Paris or promises,” he said. “I just need you.” Clara nodded, her heart full. “And I need you.” They married in the lavender field, surrounded by friends, family, and the ghosts of letters never sent. And every year, when the lavender bloomed, Clara wrote a letter to her mother. “Maman, you were right to hope. I found my way back. —Clara”
