Chapter nine Damien's eyes locked onto Beverly's as he leaned against the doorframe, his voice low and husky. "Beverly, come to me tonight." Beverly's heart skipped a beat. She knew what he meant. "Damien, I..." He stepped closer, his scent wrapping around her. "Just tonight. Let me show you pleasure like you've never known." Beverly's skin pricked. Part of her wanted to say yes, to get lost in him. But the whisper lingered: "Damien isn't who you think he is." She pulled back, her voice firm. "No, Damien. Not tonight." Damien's eyes flashed, but he smiled, slow and seductive. "As you wish. But I'll wait." ... Hours later, Beverly lay in bed, her mind racing. Why had she said no? The clock chimed midnight. She drifted off... ...and found herself in a dark forest. The blue-eyed man stood before her, his eyes burning. "Beverly," he whispered. "You're playing with fire." Beverly's heart pounded. "Who are you?" The man's smile was a s***h of white. "I'm the one who'll show you the truth. About Damien." Suddenly, she was mad, rage coursing through her veins. "Tell me!" she screamed. The man's eyes seemed to burn brighter. "Soon." And she woke, her heart racing, the darkness suffocating. Next Day Beverly stumbled out of bed, her head pounding. The dream lingered like a bad taste. She needed answers. At breakfast, Damien's eyes met hers, hot and knowing. "Beverly... about last night." Beverly's cheeks heated. "I... I've changed my mind." Damien's smile was a slow burn. "I'll send for you tonight." ... As she walked the palace grounds, a servant approached, eyes downcast. "Lady Beverly, there's a... a package for you." Beverly took the small box. Inside, a note: "Meet me in the old oak grove at dusk. -R." Rasmus. Her heart skipped a beat. Suddenly, a commotion broke out – guards shouting, a horse galloping. A messenger burst into the courtyard. "News from the border, Your Majesty!" he shouted to Damien. "The Shadow Legion approaches." Damien's face turned to stone. "Prepare the defenses." Beverly's eyes locked onto his. Danger was coming. And she wasn't sure who to trust... The Shadow Legion was a name that sent shivers down spines. Rumors said they were demons, born of darkness and fire. Beverly's heart pounded as Damien strode away, barking orders to his guards. She needed answers. And she needed them now. Beverly slipped away from the chaos, heading to her room. She changed into darker clothes, practical for sneaking out. The note from Rasmus burned in her mind. As she reached the old oak grove, Rasmus stepped from the shadows. His blue eyes gleamed. "Beverly," he said, voice low. "You're here." Beverly's heart raced. "What do you want, Rasmus?" Rasmus's smile was a s***h of white. "I want to show you the truth. About Damien. About your past." Beverly's skin pricked. "My past?" Rasmus nodded. "Your parents, Beverly. Damien was involved in their death." Beverly's world spun. No. That couldn't be true. Rasmus's eyes seemed to burn. "He's the Devil King, Beverly. And you're part of his plan." Suddenly, a twig snapped. Beverly spun – Damien stood at the edge of the grove, his eyes blazing. "Rasmus," he growled. "You'll pay for this." Rasmus laughed, low and menacing. "The truth hurts, doesn't it, Damien?" Damien's face was stone. "Beverly, come with me." Beverly hesitated. Who was telling the truth? Rasmus's voice was a whisper in her mind. "Choose wisely, Beverly." Damien's eyes locked onto Beverly's, his voice calm and convincing. "Beverly, Rasmus is lying. He's trying to turn you against me." Beverly's mind reeled. Who was telling the truth? Damien stepped closer, his eyes burning with sincerity. "Rasmus was obsessed with your parents. He wanted their power. He killed them, Beverly. Not me." Rasmus laughed, a cold sound. "Lying comes easy to you, Damien." Damien ignored him, his gaze on Beverly. "Rasmus wants you to doubt me, to weaken me. Don't let him." Beverly's thoughts swirled. Damien's story made sense. Rasmus had been pushing her towards doubt... Rasmus's face twisted. "You'll believe him, won't you? The great Devil King, lying to keep his grip on you." Damien's voice was firm. "Beverly, come with me. I'll show you the truth." Beverly nodded, slowly. She trusted Damien. As they walked away, Rasmus's whisper followed her: "You'll regret this." ... Back at the palace, Damien led her to a hidden study. He pulled out a parchment, old and worn. "This is proof," he said, his eyes flashing. "Rasmus's signature, on a pact with the Shadow Legion. He wanted power, and he'd do anything to get it." Beverly's eyes widened. It looked real. Damien's voice was gentle. "Beverly, I would never hurt you. I protect what's mine." Beverly felt a wave of relief. She believed him. But as she looked at the parchment again, a tiny detail caught her eye... Beverly's eyes narrowed as she looked at the parchment again. The signature seemed real, but... the ink looked slightly smudged. Damien's eyes followed hers, his expression darkening. "Beverly, don't look too closely. It's ancient magic." But Beverly's curiosity was piqued. She leaned in, her heart racing. Was Damien hiding something? Suddenly, the candle on the desk flickered, casting eerie shadows. The air seemed to vibrate with tension. Damien's voice was low, urgent. "Beverly, trust me. Rasmus is the enemy." Beverly pulled back, her mind racing. She needed to be sure. "I... I need some air," she said, turning to leave. Damien's eyes flashed, but he nodded. "I'll have guards escort you." As she walked out, Beverly felt eyes on her – Damien's, watching. Outside, the night was thick with shadows. Beverly slipped away from the guards, her heart pounding. She needed to investigate. To know the truth. She headed to the palace library, a maze of dusty tomes and secrets. If there was proof, it'd be here. Hours passed. Beverly pored over books, her eyes aching. And then, she saw it – an ancient entry about the Shadow Legion. "...bound to Rasmus, sworn to the darkness..." But a page was torn out. Beverly's heart sank. What was missing? A whisper echoed in her ear. "Looking for answers?" Rasmus. **********
