2.16 Mygalomorph Wilds

“Are you sure that this is wise, Luca should probably rest longer.” Declan frowned as he stared at Luca. Luca stretched to one side of the group but paused at that comment. “Are the plants here going to try and eat me?” Luca directed his question at help who had settled in the coat pocket. “No, the plants this side get plenty of food from the leftovers of the Mygalomorph’s leftovers thus the plants do not hunt.” Help shivered at the response. He’d strongly suggested when he heard the name of the Wilds that we should go around. Shade had agreed that it would be better not to go through but had said that it would take an extra week to go round. Not to mention that the beasts and the vampires hunted on the sides of the wilds. Which translated in them not being able to go around since that would put them in the open for the groups hunting them that had actually seen them. Guaranteed to end poorly. “In that case there is no need to worry about. It is just some bruises anyway.” So saying Luca took two steps forward and swung himself onto a branch. “Though this will mean that you guys will face the brunt of any fighting.” Luca settled on the wide-open part of the branch. The tangled tropical looks to the Wilds made him think of snakes and spiders. He didn’t want to deal with either of those. He just hoped the Mygalomorphs would be easy to spot. Luca hadn’t had the opportunity to talk to Help and Shade about the specifics of the Mygalomorphs all his information was second hand from Tails. Luca just wished Tails had made a more thorough investigation of what as opposed to just where the difference in their primary concerns was why Luca and Tails worked well together, they covered all bases. Though it did mean if one of them was out of action some key points were easily missed. “No problem you scared us enough yesterday I’m not interested in a repeat. You just play scout.” Tails instructed with a scowl. Luca gave a smart salute before he moved off ahead amongst the trees. “So Help what should I expect about these Mygalomorphs” Luca asked as they proceeded carefully but apace into the woods. There was a general map on Luca’s contact display, Luca presumed that Ghost or more likely Tails had mapped it out with Holly while Luca had been out. Declan still had Luca’s glasses; Luca had decided not to take them back just yet since it might be necessary to send messages and it would be useful for Declan to be able to receive them, especially since he was going to be doing acrobatics through the trees. “I’ve never seen one. The only one in the enclave was destroyed before I was born.” “Destroyed? Not killed? No never mind that just what you know about their size, habits, looks please.” “Oh um, the elders used to tell stories to scare me. So I’m not sure how true they are.” As help stuttered out her warning Luca nodded. “Even just stories are more than what we have right now,” Luca said in response as he jumped to another tree and scanned the area. “Well alright then. They said they were ancient beasts, older than even the mountains. Huge monsters three times the size of a hound.” Luca didn’t like the sound of that. Though something that large should be easily spotted? Luca looked around and the tangled and overgrown Wilds and then winced. Maybe. “Its fur is like steel difficult to cut.” That seemed to be an ongoing theme around here. It was starting to look like Luca should have bought a metal saw to this party. Pity he didn’t have one big enough and the things wouldn’t sit still for him. “It has many legs and moves very fast.” Not something they’ll be able to outrun. Though they should be able to dodge if they use their smaller size to use trees as obstacles. “It will swallow people whole when eating and keep them preserved when not.” Swallow whole? That sounds like some sort of reptile. Something like an anaconda or something, most other predators tear their food. Though an anaconda doesn’t have legs. “It poison will send you to an eternal slumber.” Not an anaconda then since they are constrictors and not poisonous. “It comes when you sleep, steals your dreams so that you never wake again.” An opportunistic hunter? Luca grew more confused. This was confusing was it something that would be actively hunting them or was it something that they needed to be wary of at camp? “Yuck, god damn it. Even in another dimension or world its still the same.” Luca flinched and raced back towards the group at Tails’ cursing. Reaching the tree just in front of them Luca noticed that the group had spread out a bit and Tails was whipping his face. “Problem?” Luca asked. “Walked into a spider web.” Tails shook his head in annoyance. Luca caught Ghosts eye who absently reached up to touch his ear. Luca realised the coms were back on then, but the others weren’t talking so as to not give too much away. Luca wasn’t sure about the need for secrecy since it would seem that most of the information had already been shared. Though he figured it might be better if they weren’t clear in case someone was caught and questioned. It was Why Luca had said anything about who had the crystals. If anyone thought about it hard enough, they might make some guesses, but they wouldn’t be able to be certain. “You must have terrible luck then; I haven’t found one yet.” Luca had expected to bump into a spider web by this point but hadn’t seen so much as a thread. “What is a spider?” Shade looked around and tilted his head to the side. That was interesting, since Tails had just walked into a wed they clearly existed here but the translation spell obviously didn’t have a matched word for them. Luca decided to leave that explanation to the others. “Figures, it felt like I walked through once but I didn’t see any actual signs.” Tails shook his head and then waved a hand. “Let’s keep moving I want to get to or past the half way point by night.” Luca nodded in agreement and then smirked at the stunned look on Declan and Cowboy’s face. They clearly expected Luca to be the one giving orders. A similar surprise flickered across Holly’s face but was gone in a second. Luca smiled and didn’t explain as he jumped back into the search around the area. How could someone moving separately lead a group? They should have put more thought into things. As Luca continued to scout, he frowned. There were no signs of animals at all not large animals of small ones. Aside from the decaying undergrowth Luca might have mistaken the place for a garden with how it completely lacked the damage to trees that was indicative of inhabitation.
