“You know this insane right? No one tries to take a Mygalomorph without several squadrons.” Shade called as his eyes bounced between people.
“That just means we have to work a bit harder and excel ourselves.” Tails waved a hand as he spoke. The next rustle we pretended not to notice until the beast moved further into the clearing.
The nice thing about working with people trained to handle random situations and work in quick together teams is that they reacted quickly to openings once a plan was decided. It didn’t create perfect teamwork but with everyone making an effort to sink up it was sufficient for executing an attack plan. The one with least amount of understanding was Shade but he showed an ability to adapt and just used Declan for a reference on his role.
Luca eyed the spider from the corner of his eye as it stepped that one step further forward people moved. Tails and Holly dove out and towards the spider coming up on either side at a distance with their torches out. Ghost spun and fired twice the shots striking at the eyes and fangs. Declan dashed out and tossed a sharp ice spear at the spiders’ legs. Shade followed a moment behind Declan and a black blade flashed out similarly aimed at the leg joints. The spider screeched in rage and moved further towards Ghost.
When the spider focused on the others the sorcerers rolled into the woods. Luca didn’t try to slip away he we certain that the beat was still watching him. He’d foiled its attempts too much already for it to forget him easily. There was a chance though. If cowboy’s comment was accurate then Luca may be able to use the spider’s actions against itself. So long as Help could keep up.
Help circled around Luca’s head as they tried to determine what they could do. “Help, how’s your shielding?” Luca shifted so he stood just to Ghost’s right.
“Its excellent I can put them up really fast.” Help puffed out their chest as they spoke, and Luca smiled.
“Perfect.” Luca nodded and when the spider scuttled another step forward to avoid the light and Holly and Tails directed it Luca charged forward. He kept out of the line of Ghosts fire but headed straight for the face of the spider. With his sword raised he made as if to swing at its fangs. The beast didn’t disappoint, and it raised a for leg and struck hard at Luca’s chest.
Luca watched the pale shield appear around him as he flew back across the clearing. When the spider shifted it obscured the light of the glow stick that had now fallen to the ground bellow it. When Luca was properly cast in shadows he flipped and landed. His chest was a little sore but nothing unmanageable. Help shot into the darkness after Luca and Luca raised a finger to his lips to stop them from speaking.
Help stopped in mid-air with wide eyes. Luca winked before moving up into the trees. He moved slower and more carefully than usual. Luca moved carefully along the branches in the dark being sure to stay out of the trees that the two sorcerers stood behind. Then it became a waiting game.
Ghost used his bullets sparingly while Tails and holly dodged strikes at them as they tried to direct the spider just that little bit further forward. In the meantime Shade and Declan struck at the leg joints continually making it refrain from fully extending a limb and limiting its ability to target any one person. The spiders focus on its own survival prevailed over its need to attack anyone person. Because of the targeted attacks it felt threated if it ignored any person.
There, the last step. On cue the sorcerers dropped the trees. Then fell hard across the legs and body pinning it in place. Luca didn’t waste a second leaping from his high point he plunged straight down. He aimed the sword to pierce straight through the eye. Luca twisted to put all his weight behind the strike prepared for a jarring stop. Instead the blade pierced through easily. Luca twisted in place and pushed off the body pulling his sword with him as he landed on the ground again to the left of the spider’s head.
Luca kept his attention on the spider until its legs stopped twitching. Through the trees he could faintly see the sky lightening. Luca looked at the tired people and the scrapes and bruises they had gained just from trying to harry the beast.
“Sorry, no time for naps unless you want it to be a more permanent one?” Luca forced back his concern it wouldn’t help them now, only strong emotions would keep them going long enough to get out of here.
“Who wants a nap? Naps are for the old and children,” Rӓv muttered as she moved away from where she’d swapped out with Holly after he’d taken a hit from the spider. She checked everyone over before saying, “You’re all fine. Time to get out of here.” after she made her callous remark Rӓv moved off to finish packing up the camp. Luca moved to help her with Ghost and Tails right behind him Holly moved a moment later before the rest arrived. Once the camp was packed up, they headed off. Luca kept them to a punishing pace as they progressed.
“Can’t we climb to the top of the trees and take a break.” Holly stumbled into a tree and huffed out a question Luca looked over at him and tilted his head it seemed he wasn’t showing the same stamina recovery as he had before. Luca scanned the rest of the group. The sorcerers and Declan also looked tired, but the rest looked fine.
“I don’t mind as long as your prepared to deal with anything that might be in the air above the forest.” Luca looked up at the trees he was seriously worried that it there were giant spiders then there could also be other things.
“Like what?” Holly demanded.
Luca looked at the third large vase shaped nest built amongst five trees that he’d seen and shuddered. “Like wasps the size of helicopters.” Even as Luca watched one such creature crawled out of the top of the nest. Luca figured that Ghost and Tails had noticed as well while Shade seemed very aware. Since they each grabbed a person and tossed them onto their backs before picking up the pace. Luca grabbed Declan who was the last one close to being exhausted while Rӓv moved to the front of the group.
The carried group started to protest only to choke on their words as one of the wasps passed in front of them to exit through as large gap in the canopy. After that only the sound of ragged breathing remained. Luca had reached a state of giving thanks to the rigidity of boundaries in this place by the time the exited the Wilds because it meant things would not pursue them into another’s territory. Now it was just a matter of seeing whether the next territory would be more or less capable of eating them.
