Arc 2: 2.1 Fantasy

It might have been just as well that Luca had watched what had happened to Tails, otherwise he’d probably be thing VR technology or mass hallucination as he stared around at the changed environment. The previous black with blue veins walls had shifted to white with red arteries. There was a soft light permeating the entire area that stretched into the corridors. Luca instantly checked the map markers. The rest of his team registered exactly where they were supposed to be. The markers for the RAL and the deployed butterflies were gone though. Finally Luca looked the heat source he’d felt in front of him. It was a man with golden eyes and a bloodthirsty smile. Luca turned his back on him giving an opening, it was a test of sort he wanted to see what these people would do. If they were normal, curious or like them in the punishment level just straight up homicidal. Luca scanned the large cavern slowly. There were at least 90 strangers in the cavern. A third of them resembled the man behind Luca dressed in furs with a distinct wildness to them. The second group wore black leather. There eyes glowed a sinister red and there were fangs distinctly apparent in their smiles. While the final third wore brightly coloured silk clothing and were pretty to look at but bore a distinct resemblance to the Ragan from the punishment level. “Well what do you know, it seems some nice enterprising people opened the door from the other side. How convenient. That also means that they have the keys.” One of the men in black leathers that could only be vampires given the circumstance purred the sentence out as he looked around the room. Almost casually he reached out and grabbed Jade who was closest to him right next to were Zeno stood by the alter. Luca realised that he couldn’t see the crystals anymore despite knowing who had them. He couldn’t feel the one he’d grabbed but there was a strange sensation around his upper arm under his clothes. Luca would have liked to ask for some explanations maybe try and halt the atmosphere. Yet as the man yanked Jade close and sunk his teeth into her neck before ripping her throat out before he dropped her to the floor it became apparent that they didn’t have that sort of time. “Find the keys kill the rest.” The dispassionate voice from one of the silk clad crew was a trigger and the fur clad group shifted. There human forms fading away to be replaced by predatory beast. Inch long claws sprouted from the claws of the vampires and the last group drew blades that were then coated in fire. Luca had a moment to think that the silk wearers were probably fey or fae given the musicality to the tone not that the spelling mattered as the beast behind him lunged for his throat. Luca twisted at the waist, and it pounced over the top of him onto the vampire that had approached from the other side. it became apparent at that point that the groups were together not allied since the beast ripped at the vampire’s throat while the vampire drove its claws into the beast’s sides. [Lucky: So they aren’t friends, and they bleed.] Luca was of the opinion if it bleeds it dies. Physiological structure didn’t appear that different from a humans or animals. Cut the head off and basically anything died. Luca eyed the ten men that closed in around him while more approached the others. Ghost and Rӓv had distance between them and any of the monsters. Similarly, Tails and Holly had started backing into a tunnel. They just needed enough of a distraction to get clear. Luca must have been near where the groups had entered since a number of them closed in on him fast. Still there were more than two dozen teams that had made it to the cavern and that had divided the monsters up. When Jade was killed Zeno and Derek had moved headed straight for the sides of the cavern with here remaining team members in tow though Derek lost a man to a pile of beasts in the process. Luca took a slow breath and apologised to Ghost in his mind. He really hadn’t thought the need would arise, but the circumstances had changed. In his heart the part of him that had been treading water in the inky black depths that washed at his soul closed his eyes. He released the breath and let himself sink below the waves. Luca felt more detached now, his swords appeared in his hands as if they had a will of their own. The first of the attackers approached with blinding speed and Luca moved. He slid forward into the man let his strike slid past his head before he rammed his sword through the monster’s throat. Blood splashed but Luca had already twisted aside to meet the beast. Swinging the blade up he got the vein under the leg as the beast sailed over his head. Luca tossed one of his blades at the fae that stepped forward and when the moved to deflect that shot Luca slid his second sword between the ribs and twisted. He grabbed the fae’s sword as the body fell and spun to meet the next attacker. Distantly Luca heard the voices of his friends through the coms. [Holly: Shouldn’t we help. Why are we just running?] [Tails: Because we’d be no help to him right now, we’d just make ourselves into another victim. In that state Lucky only has himself and all others, the others are all enemies he can’t recognise allies when he goes under. If he could control it that well the underworld wouldn’t have been able to shackle him so long.] [Rӓv: You guys are pretty carefree having time for a friendly chat.] [Holly: There were too many people there is no way that Luca can just survive that.] [Tails: You don’t think you need to worry about your own skin right now?] [Holly: We can’t just leave him to die.] [Rӓv: Lucky will be fine. We talked about blood matches; death matches before. You said you never participated. We’ve all participated a bit me more than the other two and 100 matches.] [Holly: All the more reason we should have stayed.] [Tails: Holly death matches are held one a fortnight around the globe have been for years before we were even born.] [Holly: So what?] [Rӓv: If Lucky isn’t in an official match, he participates in every death match. That sick f*** Dominic flew him all over the globe to make his money. I don’t think even Luca could tell you how many matches he’s fought.] [Tails: The size may vary but they all have one thing in common. No friends and only one survivor.] [Rӓv: Anyone here could have lived thousands of years and not fought for their life as much as Luca. In a death match were there is no one else to take care of only an i***t would bet against that sort of experience. Luck has nothing to do with it.] eventually the voices faded as well whether they stopped talking or grew to winded to speak and move or Luca’s mind just slipped to far to pick out distinct words it didn’t mater all that was left was the fight in front of him. Luca lost himself in the splash of blood and ring of battle. Then suddenly there was no one left to fight. Luca blinked as his brain stepped away from the calculative emotionless pit that he went to when he fought for blood. Returned to his less blood thirsty self Luca found himself the last man standing in a cavern filled with only corpses. Though barely fifty bodies in total littered the room and Luca could on account for nine of the monster bodies specifically the others died of collateral attacks from their fellows still it was not enough bodies for the amount of people that had been here. then of course twenty of the bodies where of the other contestants that had managed to flee into the tunnels and had been slaughtered like a fox to chooks where they stood.
