2.10 Wish for Specialised Weapons

Luca had a split second to decide. Shade or Cowboy. “Shade duck,” Ghost called as he dropped his last opponent and jumped at Shade while spinning the trident, he’d filched from someone. Luca trusted them to handle their fight and moved to intercept the whip wielder. She moved past most of the fighting and headed directly for Cowboy. The distance was awkward, but Luca still rushed forward. Cowboy backed away while he fired. At the same time Declan and the sorcerers tossed spells at her. The spells she flicked away with her whip while the bullets she mostly ignored. While she seemed to be ignoring the damage done by the bullets Luca figured they had to be doing something otherwise she wouldn’t be so determined to attack the source. Luca approached from behind as she reached within range of Cowboy. Luca struck out with a sword at her back while he shifted to the side to avoid the strike aimed at his back. The shift meant that Luca had to s***h instead of stab. He slashed against her back, and she screamed. Cowboy managed to jump back but the whip still struck across his outstretched left wrist. Cowboy’s face twisted in pain, but he maintained his hold on his guns as he continued to back away. Holly and Rӓv raced over to guard Luca’s back as the whip wielder turned away from Cowboy to focus on Luca. Bright side, swords hurt. Downside, they draw agro. Luca had notice already from the way that she moved that the whip wielder was very skilled. Moreover, since her whips seemed to be made from water and not solid Luca doubted, he’d be able to catch them. The basic translation for his situation was in serious trouble. After the Ent’s with the branches and now the whips Luca was seeing a theme to his visit to the Twilight land, and he wasn’t liking it. The first whip strike sailed past Luca’s head and he ducked to avoid it. he hoped that Rӓv and Holly behind him weren’t close enough to get caught in the splash off from the fight because he could guarantee there was going to be collateral damage, he just hoped it wasn’t any more of his people. Luca slashed out with his sword then rolled forward. She jumped to the side and lashed out again. The whip struck the sand as Luca dodged sending up a shower of fine grains into the air. Luca dodged and struck out moving the fight to the edge of the trees. With his back to the trees he could see the rest of his people in passing which prevented them getting hit by a strike by accident. The trees… Well there were lots of trees anyway. As the fight progressed Luca shifted his focus he stopped attempting to attack to incapacitate and changed to disabling strikes. He aimed for the legs and arms for the joints in particular. In the meantime Luca had to focus on avoiding strikes or taking them in such a way that they bruised and didn’t cut. He hadn’t forgotten that he still needed to cross the river and he didn’t not want to be bleeding while he swam in that. Bad enough he had the cut and laser wound on his neck. Though now that he thought about it, he hadn’t noticed anything there when he stripped and the cut at least had been pulling when he changed beforehand. Unfortunately that momentary distraction let the whip wrap around his arm. Luca was jerked forward and despite the crushing pain shifted his grip and stabbed forward with this right sword. In response the siren raised her leg and kicked out. Luca managed to drag the sword along her thigh before he was sent flying backwards and slammed into a tree. As Luca landed, he staggered and then rolled right. Ignoring the pain in his wrist as it screamed when he twisted his sword Luca drove a strike straight up behind him. A whip flopped onto the ground beside him. Wen a cool liquid ran down the blade onto his hands Luca heaved backwards as he straightened from his crouch. A soft thump sounded behind him and Luca turned to see the siren sprawled on the sand. Luca inhaled slowly as he rolled his wrists. He looked around the shore and noticed that the rest of the fighting had stopped. When he turned back to the siren, he realised that she was still alive. If that had been a human, the amount of blood loss and damage he’d dealt should have been well and truly lethal by then. As he watched though her wounds healed at a visible rate though Luca realised that in comparison to the bullet wounds the wounds from the Fae swords healed much slower like the difference between a tortoise and a hare in speed. Not that the reduced healing speed was all that comforting. Since it was still visible to the naked eye it far outstripped anything, humans were capable of. “You have got to be kidding me, is it really necessary to behead something to kill it in this stupid place?” Luca groaned. “I know I always liked specialised equipment, but I didn’t think to bring my iron and silver weapons.” Tail’s dry response dragged a reluctant chuckle from Luca. “If we’re dreaming of special equipment a flamethrower would be better, a surprised number of Nightwalkers are highly flammable.” Declan approached Luca as he spoke with a fireball held above his left hand. Luca looked at the suspended campfire for a moment before he responded. “That seems like a handy compromise.” “It would be if we weren’t so close to their nest, they can use the river to heal on deflect my shots.” The disgust in Declan’s tone told Luca that he wasn’t used to being foiled. “You are not Bloodletters lost lambs.” The statement snapped Luca’s attention to the river. Unlike the previous vocalisation of dolphin speak that he’d heard this sentence was just translated normally as if it were spoken from similar vocal cords to humans as opposed to the vastly different ones of animal vocalisation. Luca could suddenly see how the stories about siren’s singing to lure sailors to their death came about. If given the opportunity to think about it Luca might have thought with the dolphin sounds that the basis of the ‘song’ might be whale song. The perfectly normal sounding words just shot that idea down though. It was definitely nice to listen to. Luca also appreciated that the rest of his group registered the potential threat of the tones allure as the magic users raised their hands towards the source spells ready and Cowboy did the same with his guns while Luca’s team all suddenly had throwing knives in hand. Luca himself didn’t bother raising his blades to throw. For one he didn’t want to throw the nice Fae swords, what if they fell in the river and didn’t come back? For two if the voice wasn’t silenced by all the others attacks, he sincerely doubted that his was likely to make a significant difference. Luca instead just focused his eyes on the speaker. After all there was nothing inherently combative in the comment made so maybe he was back to the potential option of reasoning with the sirens.
