Luca thought for a moment. It was nearly lunch time, and the Green hadn’t shown any indication that she’d left someone in the barracks. The Red had not acted like there was anyone inside when he entered. They were already fighting. It was a perfect opportunity. Luca felt his conscience twinge slightly but shrugged it off. They were practically bathed in blood at this point one more life wouldn’t matter.
Luca slipped from the rafters and into the Green Barracks, he was incredibly grateful for the lack of locks. The barracks was thankfully empty. Luca cased around for a bit and found a spare uniform in a small size. It still didn’t sit properly on him since it was designed to accommodate wings. Still it would do for some throw away evidence. It took slightly longer to find a spare of the rather unique knife but once he did Luca slipped back out into the hall and over to the Red Barracks.
Luca listened at the door but heard nothing but silence. Luca could practically hear the arena preparations clopping along he didn’t have a lot of time to waste here. Luca shifted his grip and then slid the door open and eased into the room. The Red soldier was sprawled out on a bed at the back of the room.
“Useless did you bring my lunch?” his tone was demeaning, and he didn’t even bother to open his eyes. Luca took the gift on face value. He tossed the strange blade hard across the room. It slammed into the throat of the Red. As the man sat up and reached for the blade Luca lunged across the room. Luca swung around behind him and wrenched the blade out of the throat. The Harpy took a swipe back at Luca. Luca jerked aside and drove the knife in again. The Harpies claws caught at the loose sleave of the uniform tearing it while blood splashed on the other sleeve and hand. Luca regretted not having gloves as well, but they were not something Harpies wore.
Two more strikes and the Harpy finally stopped moving. Luca didn’t have time to re-group when the door rattled. With no other choice Luca dashed and flung himself out the window. Luca wasn’t going for anything fancy. In particular he couldn’t stay outside since that would be one of the first places that people would check. So Luca launched his hook wing as he dove and swung back into the corridor bellow. Luca pressed his back against the wall as the wing retracted counting the seconds until he could move back into the rafters.
Once Luca was back in the rafters he hurried around to the main armoury. The news of the murder spread quickly, and people ran around fighting breaking out between groups at every turn. The armoury was now guarded by one Harpy from each colour.
[Ghost: Whatever you did has turned them into headless chickens. The number of guards around the captives has dropped to a quarter of what it was.]
[Lucky: That’s good then.] Luca relaxed a fraction as he eased his way through the building to the central arena. Luca looked at the rust-coloured sand below in disgust. He wondered briefly now if the area’s he’d been forced to back home would have looked the same were it not for modern cleaning and the need to hide the evidence. With gritted teeth Luca swung into the armoury and looked around. All cold weapons.
[Lucky: What I wouldn’t give for quick set cement right now.]
[Rӓv: Ask and you shall receive.] Luca paused he’d just been complaining to someone who would likely feel his pain. He had not expected a positive response.
[Lucky: Wait, really?]
[Rӓv: Yep, part of the ingredients for Aran’s webbing. Just a minute and I’ll send them to you.] They used cement in the web? No wonder the Harpies were struggling with it. Still that made things much easier. While Luca waited for Aran to arrive, he found a sizeable barrel and stuffed all the weapons he could into the barrel when that wasn’t enough Luca just filled a few more. Luca had stuffed all the weapons into barrel when Aran arrived. Luca smiled and waved a hand and Aran instantly started webbing the barrels. While they worked Luca moved to the door prepared to slip out and get into position for the evening distraction. It was getting late in the day and Luca had done everything he could to have the Harpies well distracted.
As Luca settled beside the door it started to open. Luca froze in place before he stepped one pace over to not be immediately visible as the Harpy entered. Thankfully it was only the one. So when he started in place at the sight of Aran Luca reached out and chopped down on the back of the neck. The Harpy stiffened for a second and then collapsed on the ground.
“Time to go,” Luca muttered and headed straight for the nearest window. Luca swung out the window in the fading light and launched himself across to the next building rolling on the roof as he landed. Luca hopped the falling light was the signal for butterfly nap time since he needed to get across to the West of town for his final distraction.
[Lucky: I’m heading to make one final distraction are you lot ready?]
[Ghost: Shade and I are in position. Declan assures me that all the captives are good to go. We know our role what the signal?] Luca thought about that grain warehouse and smirked as he raced across the roof tops.
[Lucky: Don’t worry you won’t be able to miss it.] Luca rolled onto the next roof and the jerked his head back when he found himself face to snout with Lil’ Miss. He looked around and realised that he’d covered the ground faster than he’d thought. He wasn’t even breathing hard. There was no sign of snakes or rats for which Luca was grateful and an eerie silence had fallen over the area. Just what he needed.
Luca hopped down from the roof and slid in through a poorly closed door to the grain room. Luca grabbed a small bag of grain and a sheet of waxy cloth. He’d have preferred paper but as expected there was none of that lying around. Coming back out of the room Luca closed the door properly and made his way up onto the roof.
With a step knife Luca punctured a whole into the roof and used the waxy fabric to make a sort of funnel. This was not a great place to go about this and was a rather dangerous means of making a distraction, but Luca needed lemonade and he didn’t pack the lemons.
As the sun continued to set Luca carefully misted the grain flower into the funnel and into the air of the warehouse. As the sun sank fully below the horizon Luca sifted in the last handful his heart sinking that it wasn’t going to work. As he released his holder on the funnel the world exploded. A giant hand picked him up and tossed him backwards. Luca felt completely weightless as his vision darkened and the incessant ringing in his ears faded away.
