We pull up to Figwood right around 10 AM, I haven’t stopped thinking about the fact that Prince Arlo would be attending the same year as us. I wondered why he had to take his title so soon, it couldn’t be because of the kidnappings, could it? A couple months back, at the start of the summer, Nora’s father Beta Andrew told us that creatures were popping up missing all over our world. I didn’t think much of it until he divulged that it wasn’t just werewolves they were taking, it was fae, gnomes, goblins, it seemed anything of magical decent was fair game. They were even taking lycans, being that they could overpower them, that is. No one really knew what was happening to the creatures that were being kidnapped, but it obviously wasn’t good.
We step out of the car, grab our bags, and head to our dorm to settle in, we reach the commons when I hear her.. Great.. I seriously couldn’t even make it five minutes on campus before they saw me? Seriously? “EverGreen filled out over the summer, she might be worth something now.” Brennan Stone, which means Hallie Prescott and their gang were right there with them. Were they waiting for me or something? “Keep walking and just ignore them, they have a whole year, don’t let them ruin the first couple of minutes here.”, says Nora, noticing me start to peel my cuticles while going to town on my lip. “You’re right, I see the dorm, let’s keep going.”, I say, trying not to look back at my tormentors. We reach the dorms and head to our floor, we toured and got to see where we would be living a few weeks ago, so finding our room was fairly easy. Once inside we set our stuff down and both plop onto our beds, our shift at the cafe didn’t start until 3 pm, and truthfully I wasn’t much up for going back out to the commons beforehand. The cafe sat in the outside common area, and had workers that didn’t go to Figwood working at it as well, like our cook Tyler. Tyler was 17 and would be coming to Figwood next year, he was kind of a burn out though, always stoned or getting into some kind of trouble, which is why he worked at the cafe. His parents thought if he was under direct supervision and had a job, he might one day go work with his father as a chef for Lycan King Carlisle, which, you guessed it, was Prince Arlo’s dad. Nora and I were trained on our jobs in the cafe during a two week period this summer, Tyler’s training took a little longer than ours, naturally. But we found out it’d be Tyler, Nora and I on our shift, and we wouldn’t really meet the other workers, which was fine by me. Tyler would handle the pastries and breakfast sandwiches, and Nora and I would serve and make the drinks, easy enough. I know I should be excited for my first shift, but I still couldn’t help but be nervous in case Hallie, Brennan and their little gang came in, which they were sure to.
“Well, I say we unpack, maybe decorate a bit, and then watch one of those bad movies you binged on all summer before we head to our shift, you game?” Nora says, breaking the silence.
“Sounds nice, I had one about a tire that rolls around and murders people that I haven’t gotten to yet, or one about a man getting turned into a walrus, which one?” I say, unzipping my bags so I could hang my clothes.
“Those are my choices?”, Nora says with a laugh, “I guess we’ll do the tire one, and we can watch the walrus one later if we’re not too beat. Oh! Hey! Also, I brought some scent covering spray, I thought it might help lower your anxiety on the first day, I don’t know if you’ve noticed but your scent is strong, Evy, like real strong.” I had noticed, Willow had given me some spray at the beginning of summer, and with sitting in my house aside from my runs, I really couldn’t understand how it was gone already, so Nora must have picked up on that last time she was over.
“Thank you, dude, seriously, that just took like half of my stress away. I ran out last week.” I say, hanging up the last of my clothes, the party outfits Willow insisted I bring. We finish up unpacking and begin to decorate when our phones ping:
Jasmine:
Hey! Are you guys here yet? I have a whole pizza I can’t eat myself, and if I stay in the commons any longer, I’ll rip Hallie and Jessica’s faces off.
If anyone hated Hallie more than I did, it was Jasmine, Hallie and Jasmine had a rivalry for as long as I could remember. Jasmine was the only she wolf around that Hallie felt was a threat, not only to her place with Brennan, but her high popularity level as well. While Hallie was fast, Jasmine was just a bit faster, the same with their smarts, strength, looks, even their hair. Hallie had beautiful blonde hair that sparkled in the sun, I hated that I was jealous of it, but Jasmine had golden caramel hair that looked as if it was hand laid by the gods themselves. Jasmine was years ahead on her humor, and encapsulated a genuine gracefulness that just drew you to her, we all knew at a young age she was destined for greatness. Even my perfect sister Willow seemed jealous of Jasmine, we all were, and for good reason. I text her back:
Everly:
Yeah we’re here, come to building A room 2C, we’re about to watch a movie before our shift.
Jasmine: Great can’t wait! Also guys, I saw the Prince, and goddess, he is perfect.
He was already here? I guess why wouldn’t he be, everyone was here today, it was check in day, but I thought they’d have an announcement or something. We finish up decorating and pull up the movie right as Jasmine knocks, “Well? Give us the deets!”, Nora says. “Oh no, you’ll see him when you see him, but just know, I only caught a glimpse before I bared my neck in submission. That is one powerful and intimidating dude… I mean, Prince.” With that news I softened a bit, what was I thinking being so worried? A Prince was here and I thought people would be focused on me? Yeah right, I’ll be able to fade into the background just like I wanted, and become a pack doctor easier than I first lead on, this was great! We sat and watched the movie, making small talk while munching on the pizza, the movie ended just in time for us to get ready and make it to the cafe a few minutes early. I dress in my uniform while Nora insists she braids my hair, I let her, and motion to leave. “Everly, spray.”, she says. Oh yeah, with my newfound ease I forgot I still was very potent, eyes wouldn’t be on me, but I really wasn’t interested in finding my mate tonight.
