April couldn’t sleep that night. She lay on her side, staring at the wall, the confrontation with Landon playing over and over again in her mind like a scratched record she couldn’t stop. Every word echoed louder than the last. “You shouldn’t be here.” “You’re getting in over your head.” “Then maybe you shouldn’t have taught me to drown.” She hated how her voice had cracked when she said that. Hated even more that she meant it. By the time the first streaks of morning light crept into her bedroom, she was still wide awake. Her head was throbbing.
