Waking up very early,Next day, 9 AM sharp, Priya walked Lizzy to her English Lit lecture hall. "Okay, drop you here! Gotta dash, my Poli-Sci class starts in 10 we're dissecting Trudeau's policies ."
Lizzy grinned. "Go slay, Priya Text me later?"
Priya nodded, already jogging off. "Definitely! Find you after lunch!"
Lizzy took a deep breath, smoothing her outfit. Time to crush this first day .
Inside the lecture hall, Prof. Tremblay's booming voice welcomed everyone: "Bonjour, everyone! Welcome to Comparative Lit today, we dive into The Alchemist, Lizzy's eyes lit up Coelho!!
Lizzy scanned the crowded lecture hall, her eyes scanning for an empty seat. The room was buzzing with chatter, and the scent of freshly printed papers wafted through the air. She spotted an open spot a few rows back and made her way towards it, her backpack brushing against the arms and shoulders of seated students.
As she squeezed past a row, she accidentally bumped into a girl with a designer handbag and a perfectly contoured face. The girl looked up, her eyes narrowing into slits. "Watch it, freshman," she snapped, her voice dripping with disdain.
Lizzy's cheeks flushed. "Sorry, ma," she said quickly, trying to move past.
The girl raised an eyebrow, her gaze raking over Lizzy's outfit. "You should be more careful. This is McGill, not some backwater uni."
Lizzy's smile faltered, but she bit back a retort. "Sorry again," she muttered, dropping into the empty seat.
The girl leaned back in her seat, a bored expression on her face. "I'm Genevieve, by the way. Don't bother trying to suck up to me."
Lizzy's eyes met Genevieve's, a spark of amusement igniting within her. "Lizzy, nice to meet you...I think ."
Genevieve raised an eyebrow, a hint of surprise flickering across her face before she turned back to her phone.
As Lizzy got out her notebook, Genevieve's loud whisper cut through the air, aimed at her two friends seated in front of them. "Ugh, some people think they can just wade in here and be relevant. Total trash trying to clabber."
The two girls giggled, one of them adding, "Preach, Gen! Like she doesn't even know how to dress."
Lizzy's jaw tightened, but she kept her eyes on Prof. Tremblay, who was writing on the board.
Prof. Tremblay turned to the class, his eyes twinkling. "Alright, let's get started. Who can tell me the significance of Paulo Coelho's use of symbolism in _The Alchemist_?"
Lizzy's hand shot up, and Genevieve's gaze flicked to her, a glimmer of disdain in her eyes. Prof. Tremblay nodded at Lizzy. "Yes, you in the back?"
Lizzy smiled sweetly. "The Personal Legend is the core symbol, sir – it's like the ultimate goal people chase, often missing the treasure in front of 'em."
Genevieve snorted softly, rolling her eyes. "Wow, so original."
Prof. Tremblay beamed. "Exactly! The journey's the point, n'est-ce pas?"
Genevieve raised her hand next. "Prof, isn't that a bit cliche? I mean, Coelho's all about finding 'your thing'...sounds like self-help in fiction."
Prof. Tremblay chuckled. "Ah, great point, Genevieve. But isn't that the beauty – blending wisdom with narrative?"
As class ended, Genevieve stood up, her entourage following. "Don't bother trying to talk to me, trash. Stay in your lane," she muttered, loud enough for Lizzy to hear.
Lizzy's eyes met Genevieve's, a spark of amusement igniting within her. "Don't worry, I'll stick to my lane – right next to Prof. Tremblay's approval ."
Genevieve's expression darkened, but she sauntered off with her friends.
Lizzy packed up, grinning. Looks like it's on fire.
As Lizzy walked out of the lecture hall, she pulled out her phone and texted Priya: "Gen-v-i-e-v-e is on my case . Lunch at the SSMU?"
Priya replied instantly: "Omg yes! Spill the tea ."
Lizzy slid into the SSMU café, spotting Priya saving seats. As she joined her, Genevieve walked in with her crew, eyes scanning the room – and landed on Lizzy. For a flicker, their gazes locked. Genevieve's lip curled.
Priya noticed the look and leaned in. "So, what's the story with Queen Bee?"
Lizzy grinned mischievously. "You'll never guess who just decided to make me her enemy on day 1."
Priya raised an eyebrow, sipping her coffee. "Who?"
Lizzy nodded towards Genevieve. "That girl – Genevieve. Queen bee of our English Lit class. Thinks she's the vibe just because her dad's loaded."
Priya followed Lizzy's gaze, eyes widening. "Wait, the one giving you the stink-eye? What did you do?"
Lizzy chuckled. "I bumped into her in class, answered a question right, and now she's convinced I'm trying to steal her spotlight ."
Priya laughed. "Girl, you got drama on day 1! Spill what's the tea on her?"
Lizzy leaned closer. "Apparently, I'm 'trash' for thinking I can fit in here. Her words, not mine."Lizzy and Priya walked into the rez cafeteria, the aroma of Montreal-style poutine and maple syrup wafting through the air. They grabbed a table by the window and settled in.
Genevieve was across the room, surrounded by her clique, laughing loudly.
Priya leaned in. "So, what's the deal with Queen Bee over there?"
Lizzy nodded towards Genevieve. "Apparently, I'm 'trash' for thinking I can fit in. Her words, not mine ."
Just then, a tall, handsome guy with icy blue eyes walked in. He scanned the room, expression unreadable, and headed for an empty table.
The cafeteria fell silent. Girls stared. Guys stared harder.
Genevieve's gaze locked on him, and for once, she blushed .
Priya whispered, "Whoa. He’s...a lot."
Lizzy’s eyes widened. "Guess everyone's getting swooned ."
The guy, Ethan, sat down, unfazed, and pulled out a thick textbook. The room exhaled...but everyone kept sneaking glocks at him.
Genevieve regained her composure, whispering to her friends, "Guess he's new. Wonder who he is."
Genevieve's friends started speculating, trying to figure out who Ethan was and why he seemed so... intimidating. One of them leaned in, "Think he's in our lit class?"
Genevieve's gaze flicked back to Ethan, who was now scribbling notes in his book. "Doubt it. He's probably MBA or law. You see those clothes? "
Priya turned to Lizzy, whispering, "Think he's with Genevieve's crew?"
Lizzy shrugged. "Doubt it. He looks like he'd eat them alive ."
Ethan looked up suddenly, eyes meeting Lizzy's for a split second. He looked away, expression unchanged.
Genevieve noticed the glance and her smile tightened. "Guess he's playing it cool, huh?"
Genevieve's friends started giggling, trying to get her attention back on track. "Gen, you okay? You got a little...flustered ."
Genevieve rolled her eyes, laughing it off. "Shut up, he's just...different."
Ethan stood up, book in hand, and walked out of the cafeteria. The room seemed to breathe again.
Lizzy turned to Priya. "Think he'll be on our radar?"
Priya grinned mischievously. "Only one way to find out ."
Genevieve's group started dispersing, with Genevieve herself looking thoughtful. As she packed up, her eyes flicked towards the door Ethan had exited through.
As Genevieve walked out of the cafeteria, she pulled out her phone and dialed a number. "Hey, it's me. We got a new guy in the MBA program...Ethan. Find out everything ."
She hung up, a small smile playing on her lips.
Meanwhile, Lizzy and Priya headed back to their hostel, buzzing with the day's events.
Priya flopped onto her bed. "Girl, what a day! "
Lizzy grinned, digging through her bag. "And it's just started! G got her claws out ."
Priya snorted. "And Ethan's like 'nope' ."
Lizzy chuckled, pulling out her notes. "Guess we'll see how long he keeps that up ."
The girls spent the evening catching up on assignments, gossiping, and prepping for the next day.
As they settled in for the night, Priya turned to Lizzy. "You think Ethan's gonna be a problem?"
Lizzy shrugged, eyes on her phone. "Doubt it. He seems like a challenge, though ."
Priya grinned. "Sounds like fun! "
Lizzy replied smiling sweetly Goodnight..we have to sleep early to wake up early tomorrow is another day.
