Chapter 3

I fumbled forward unsteadily and collapsed into Ethan's arms. "Darling, I am so sorry. I cannot see properly, so it was not on purpose. Please do not be mad at me, alright?" Ethan patted my back with gentle reassurance. "I am not angry at all. There is no need for you to feel guilty." From the corner of my eye, I caught Adrian's face twisted with fury. A thrill of satisfaction coursed through me. I deliberately nestled deeper against Ethan's chest. "Darling, I am soaked to the skin and feel terrible. Could you help me with a bath? Maybe massage my sore waist afterward..." Ethan's hand on my back faltered. "Of course... of course I can." "Scarlett!" A flash of dark anger crossed Adrian's brow as he sharply cut us off. "Take her to bathe and change immediately!" As the servants guided me away, I heard Adrian's furious growl behind me. "Ethan, we need to talk." After changing into fresh clothes, I encountered Adrian and Ethan in the hallway. Adrian wore a displeased scowl and questioned Ethan in a cold tone. "Ethan, don't you always claim disinterest in women? So why are you reacting this way to Scarlett?" Ethan lit a cigarette and paused briefly before replying. "I am only human, not some emotionless god. When an attractive woman keeps pressing herself against me, naturally, I respond. That is pretty normal, is it not?" Adrian looked utterly incredulous, his complexion turning deathly pale. "Scarlett has always been so reserved and distant. How could she...? Ethan, you must give me your word. No matter the temptation, you cannot lay a finger on Scarlett! She is my wife, after all." "You still remember that she is your wife?" Ethan exhaled a smoke ring, his face etched with mockery. "For over a year, you have been lost in your whirlwind romance with Mia. Have you spared her even a single day of genuine care?" Adrian fell silent. Ethan crushed out his cigarette. "Since you adore Mia so deeply, why not just divorce Scarlett and be done with it?" "I cannot divorce her!" Adrian's reaction turned heated and desperate. "Scarlett and I grew up together. I still have some feelings for her. But I pursued Mia for ages, and she finally opened her heart to me. I cannot bear to lose her now..." Ethan let out a contemptuous snort. "What a scumbag." I had heard enough. I turned and walked away without another glance. 'Adrian, you want to keep your precious first love, yet you refuse to let go of the wife who stands by your side. But you are a fool to think the world works that way.' When the banquet concluded, Adrian drove me back to our residence. By the time we arrived, Ethan was already waiting by the front entrance to assume his role. The moment Adrian handed me off to Ethan, he turned on his heel and drove away without a single backward glance. Once inside, I went straight into the master bathroom. After a few minutes, I let out a loud, startled cry from inside. "Darling! I just slipped and fell! I hit my shoulder terribly hard. Can you please come in and help me apply some ointment?" In no time at all, the bathroom door clicked open, and Ethan walked in holding a tube of medicinal cream. I was standing there with a silk bath towel loosely draped around my form, my hair dripping wet, and beads of water glistening on my bare skin. Ethan stared at me, freezing completely for two long seconds. He hurriedly tore his eyes away, nervously focusing his attention on squeezing the cream onto his fingers to hide his embarrassment. I feigned another clumsy slip, losing my balance and tumbling directly into his arms. The loose towel fell straight to the floor in a heap, leaving our heated bodies pressed flush against one another. The tips of Ethan's ears turned a vivid shade of crimson. He made a panicked, awkward attempt to push me back to a safe distance. "Scarlett, you..." I didn't let him finish. I leaned up and silenced his lips with a deep, breathless kiss. Ethan went rigid for one final, agonizing moment, but then all his carefully constructed defenses crumbled entirely. He wrapped his arms around me, holding the back of my head as he returned the kiss with a fierce, burning passion. Between breathless gasps, my fingers moved down, unbuckling his belt. "Darling, we have been married for so long," I murmured against his lips. "It is high time we finally have a child of our own." Ethan's Adam's apple bobbed heavily as he fought for air. "...Alright," he groaned out, completely surrendered. "Whatever you want." With that, he lifted me up and carried me straight to the bedroom. His phone began to ring loudly on the nightstand, but Ethan reached out and aggressively swiped the screen to reject the call. "Aren't you going to answer...?" Before I could finish the sentence, he captured my lips again, stealing the words right out of my mouth. From that late afternoon until the deep hours of the night, Ethan was like a starving predator finally unleashed, taking me over and over without a single hint of exhaustion. Eventually, pure fatigue washed over me, and I drifted off to sleep. In a hazy, half-conscious state, I vaguely heard Ethan answering a phone call, his voice dropped to a harsh, quiet whisper. "I know what I am doing," he growled into the receiver. "I won't touch her. What, you don't trust me? If you don't trust me, then come back and handle it yourself." He let out a cold, dismissive scoff. "Swear to God? You know damn well I am an atheist." After cutting the call, Ethan leaned down over the mattress, his lips brushing against my ear as he whispered a soft, aching question. "Scarlett... out of everyone in the world, why does it have to be him that you love?" I desperately wanted to open my eyes and tell him right then that I would never love Adrian again. But the sheer exhaustion was too heavy, and I sank back down into a deep, dreamless slumber.
