Chapter 4

From that day forward, Ethan became completely insatiable, like a starving predator that had finally tasted sweetness. For two solid months, he spent every single night making intense, breathless love with me. He completely abandoned his usual routine, pouring every ounce of his time, focus, and energy into my well-being. Meanwhile, rumors reached me that Adrian had flown across the world to take Mia on an extended, lavish vacation. For those exact same two months, he never once showed his face or checked in on our home. Eventually, the intense physical toll caught up with me. Feeling deeply unwell and constantly exhausted, Ethan decided to take me to the hospital for a thorough checkup. By a cruel twist of fate, the moment we approached the hospital entrance, we ran directly into Adrian and Mia, who had just touched down from their overseas trip. "Oh, what a coincidence," Mia spoke up first, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness and a poorly hidden sense of triumph. "I have been feeling so terribly under the weather lately, constantly nauseous and unable to keep anything down. I was just telling Adrian that I might actually be pregnant. What brings the two of you to the hospital?" Ethan shot her a cold, dismissive glare. "Scarlett isn't feeling well. I am bringing her in for an examination." Terrified of blowing his cover in a public space, Adrian remained entirely tight-lipped, not uttering a single syllable. However, his eyes locked instantly onto my neck, tracking the distinct, dark crimson marks scattered across my skin. His expression decayed into a thunderous, terrifying freeze. Pretending to be completely oblivious to the tension, I calmly walked past them, maintaining my sightless facade. Yet, the exact moment our shoulders brushed, Mia let out a sharp, dramatic shriek. She stumbled backward, flailing her arms, and crashed straight down into the decorative water fountain beside the walkway. Adrian's face paled in an instant. Without a second thought, he leaped into the shallow pool, dragging a dripping, sobbing Mia out of the water. Drenched from head to toe, Mia clung to him, weeping so hard she could barely catch her breath. "Adrian! Scarlett shoved me! She intentionally threw me into the water! I have never done anything to deserve this. Why does she keep targeting and humiliating me over and over again?" Adrian's features contorted into a mask of pure, unbridled fury. He turned on me, his voice booming across the courtyard. "Scarlett! Apologize to Mia right now!" A sharp, bitter laugh escaped my lips. He was always exactly like this. He never needed proof, never asked for context; he simply pronounced me guilty the moment Mia shed a single tear. "I did nothing wrong, so why should I apologize?" Adrian's eyes turned dangerously dark. "If not you, then who? Mia was right beside you. Do you expect me to believe she jumped in herself? Has your blindness turned you into such a vicious person?" For so many years, no matter how deeply I had poured my heart into our relationship, Mia had always held the top place in his heart. "I will not apologize," I replied firmly. "You have no choice!" He pressed down on my head, forcing me toward Mia in a humiliating bow. "Get your hands off her!" Ethan roared, charging into the fray. He violently ripped Adrian's hand away from my hair, stepping between us like a shield. "Don't you dare touch her again!" Adrian ground his teeth together, his jaw tight as his face flushed a dangerous, mottled red. Amidst the chaotic shouting, a sudden, blinding wave of vertigo hit me. It felt as though all the strength was instantly drained from my limbs. The world spun rapidly into darkness, and I collapsed backward onto the cold concrete. Before my head could hit the ground, two panicked, desperate cries echoed over me. "Scarlett!" Ethan screamed, swiftly diving forward to catch my limp, unconscious body. But Adrian was just as fast, violently hauling me out of Ethan's arms and cradling me against his chest. "Scarlett! Can you hear me? Please, wake up! I am sorry, I shouldn't have been so harsh on you. Just open your eyes, please..." Panicked and completely frantic, Adrian scooped me up into his arms and ran at a full sprint toward the emergency room. While they waited outside the trauma bay, Adrian stood by the wall, glaring at Ethan with eyes full of venom. "You owe me an explanation, Ethan. What the hell are those dark marks all over Scarlett's neck?" Ethan let out a sharp, mocking scoff. "At a time like this, your only concern should be whether your wife is going to survive." Right then, the heavy double doors swung open, and the attending physician stepped out, pulling down his surgical mask. "There is no need to panic," the doctor announced calmly. "Your wife simply fainted due to extreme emotional distress and exhaustion. She is pregnant. Once her vitals stabilize, she will wake up in a few minutes." "What did you just say?" Adrian gasped, freezing completely as if struck by a bolt of lightning. Ethan froze as well, but a sudden, brilliant flash of pure ecstasy swept across his regular, stoic features. Adrian turned his head slowly, staring at his best friend in absolute horror, his voice trembling violently. "This child... is it yours?"
