The Beast Beneath the Skin

1755 Words
The bookstore became silent. Not peaceful. Silent in the way the world became quiet before a storm. Ariana stood frozen behind the counter, staring at the impossible scene unfolding in front of her. The creature in front of her was not a wolf. Not entirely. It had the body of something that belonged in nightmares, something born from darkness and blood. Every instinct she possessed screamed at her to run. But she couldn't. Because the man standing between her and that monster was just as impossible. Kael Vargan. She didn't know his name yet. She didn't know what he was. But she knew one thing. The creature feared him. The massive beast lowered its head slightly, studying Kael. "So the legends were right," it growled. Kael's expression remained cold. "Legends are usually written by survivors." The creature laughed. A terrible sound. "You still think you can protect them?" Its glowing eyes moved toward Ariana. Her blood turned cold. "They don't know what she is." Kael's gaze sharpened. "Neither do you." For the first time, the creature hesitated. Ariana noticed. Whatever this was... whatever world she had accidentally stepped into... she was important. And that terrified her more than the monster itself. The rogue attacked first. There was no warning. One second it stood still. The next, it crossed the room with impossible speed. Kael moved faster. The impact shook the wooden floor beneath them. Ariana stumbled backward as claws collided with claws. Not human hands. Not human strength. The sound of the fight was something she would never forget. The breaking of wood. The roar of something ancient. The violence of creatures who had spent centuries hiding from humanity. Kael pushed the rogue back, but the creature recovered instantly. "You've grown weaker, Alpha." Kael's eyes flashed gold. "You're mistaken." His voice dropped. "I've grown patient." The rogue lunged again. This time Kael shifted. Ariana watched in horror as the man she had seen seconds before disappeared beneath something else. Bones moved. Muscles changed. A sound between a growl and a roar filled the bookstore. The creature that emerged was enormous. A black wolf. Bigger than any animal had the right to be. Its fur was like midnight. Its eyes burned gold. The Alpha. The true Alpha. Ariana forgot how to breathe. The wolf turned toward her for the briefest moment. And somehow... she knew. It knew her. Not as prey. Not as a stranger. Something deeper. Something she couldn't understand. "Don't look away." The voice came from behind her. Human. Ariana turned sharply. Lucian stood near the entrance, partially shifted, his eyes glowing faintly. "What are you?" The question escaped before she could stop it. Lucian looked almost amused. "Usually people ask that after they survive." "You're not human." "No." His answer was simple. Honest. Ariana's grip tightened around her bag. "The legends..." "Are real." The words hit harder than she expected. Werewolves. The word appeared in her mind. Impossible. Ridiculous. Yet the evidence was standing in front of her. "You knew about this?" Lucian studied her carefully. "No." "Then why are they after me?" His expression changed. That was the question everyone feared. The question no one wanted to answer. "That's what we're going to find out." The fight ended almost as quickly as it began. The rogue crashed through the bookstore wall, disappearing into the rain outside. Kael followed. The street was empty. Only broken glass and rain remained. He stood there, breathing heavily, his wolf fighting to return to control. Something was wrong. The rogue had been stronger than expected. But that wasn't what bothered him. Before escaping, the creature had whispered something. A name. Ariana. It knew her. Someone had sent it. Someone had been watching her. Kael returned to the bookstore. His eyes immediately found her. Ariana stood beside the counter, pale but standing. Most humans would have been screaming. Running. Breaking down. She wasn't. She looked terrified. But she stayed. Interesting. Very interesting. Their eyes met. For a moment, neither spoke. The entire world seemed to disappear. Then Ariana finally found her voice. "Who are you?" Kael looked at her. The woman who had awakened something inside him that should have remained asleep. The woman whose blood carried a secret older than his clan. "The question is..." He stepped closer. "...what are you?" Ariana's expression hardened. "I don't know what game you're playing, but I am not one of your monsters." Something almost like amusement appeared in Kael's eyes. Most people feared him. She challenged him. "You have no idea what world you just entered." "And you have no idea who you're talking to." For the first time in years... Kael felt something dangerously close to curiosity. A human woman standing before an Alpha. Unbroken. Unafraid. Outside, hidden in the darkness across the street, another figure watched. A man with silver eyes. A rival Alpha. Darian Voss. He smiled as he watched Kael and Ariana through the rain. "So..." "The last Alpha has finally found her." His smile widened. "Now the war can begin." The rain continued to fall. Heavy. Cold. Relentless. Inside the ruined bookstore, the silence felt heavier than the storm outside. Ariana stared at Kael. She wanted answers. She wanted an explanation that made sense. But nothing about this night made sense anymore. The world she had known a few hours ago had disappeared. Legends were real. Monsters existed. And the man standing in front of her was one of them. Yet, strangely... she felt safer with him than she had with the creature that attacked her. That realization disturbed her. "You expect me to just accept this?" Ariana asked. Kael looked at her calmly. "No." His answer surprised her. "No?" "No." He stepped closer, but not enough to threaten her. "You should question everything." Ariana crossed her arms. "That's the first reasonable thing you've said." Lucian looked between them. A small smile appeared on his face. Interesting. Very interesting. Nobody spoke to Kael like that. Nobody except Ariana Blackwell. Kael studied her carefully. Humans were easy to read. Fear. Anger. Confusion. Their emotions were written all over them. But Ariana was different. She was afraid, but she wasn't controlled by fear. She was confused, but her mind was already searching for answers. She was standing in the middle of a supernatural battle, facing creatures she had believed were impossible... and her first instinct was to argue. His wolf noticed. His wolf approved. Kael hated that. "What is your name?" he asked. Ariana hesitated. "You don't know?" "If I did, I wouldn't ask." She watched him for a moment. "Ariana Blackwell." The moment her name left her lips, something changed. Kael felt it. A strange pressure in his chest. A connection. A whisper from the wolf inside him. Mine. The word came so suddenly that Kael almost lost control. He immediately pushed it away. No. Impossible. A wolf could recognize a mate. But an Alpha could not allow instinct to rule him. Not now. Not ever. Ariana noticed the brief change in his expression. "Are you okay?" Kael looked away. "I'm fine." She narrowed her eyes. "You don't look fine." Lucian almost laughed. Kael gave him a warning glance. The Beta immediately looked away. Ariana picked up her bag from the floor. "I need to go." "No." The word came too quickly. Too firmly. Her eyes narrowed. "Excuse me?" Kael realized his mistake. "The rogue who attacked you knew your name." "So?" "So it means someone has been watching you." Ariana became quiet. The thought had already crossed her mind. "Why?" Kael didn't answer. Because the truth was dangerous. Because he didn't know. Because admitting that she might be connected to an ancient prophecy would only bring more fear. And because some part of him wanted to keep her away from this world. Even though another part wanted her closer. "You need protection." Ariana gave a humorless laugh. "From what? More giant nightmare wolves?" "Yes." The seriousness of his answer made her stop. She expected arrogance. A joke. Anything. Not honesty. For a moment, neither moved. Then she said: "I don't know you." "No." "You are a stranger who turns into a wolf." "Yes." "You expect me to trust you?" Kael looked directly into her eyes. "No." Ariana blinked. Again, she was surprised. "But you should understand something," he continued. "The thing that attacked you will come back." The confidence in his voice was terrifying. Because she believed him. Outside, across the street, Darian Voss watched from the shadows. The rival Alpha stood beneath a black umbrella, wearing an expensive suit that hid the danger beneath it. Unlike Kael, Darian never needed to show his strength. He preferred people discovering it too late. Beside him stood one of his warriors. "Should we take her now?" Darian smiled. "No." The warrior looked confused. "But she is the reason the prophecy—" "I know exactly what she is." His silver eyes remained fixed on Ariana. "And that is why we wait." "Why?" Darian looked toward Kael. The two Alphas had never trusted each other. Never respected each other. But they understood one another. Power recognized power. "Because Kael Vargan will do what he always does." "What?" Darian's smile grew colder. "He will try to protect everyone." A pause. "And that will be his weakness." Back inside the bookstore, Ariana looked at the destruction around her. The broken windows. The shattered shelves. The impossible truth. Her entire life had been built on searching for hidden things. Now she had finally found one. And she wasn't sure she wanted it. Kael walked toward the door. "We're leaving." Ariana frowned. "We?" "Yes." "I didn't agree to that." Kael stopped. For a moment, his expression softened. "You don't understand the danger yet." Ariana stepped closer. "And you don't understand me yet." The words caught him off guard. She continued: "I spent my whole life looking for answers. I am not going to run away now that I finally found them." Kael stared at her. Most people wanted safety. She wanted truth. Dangerous. Very dangerous. A slow breath left him. "Then stay close." Ariana raised an eyebrow. "Is that an order?" "No." His eyes met hers. "It's a warning." As they stepped into the rain, neither of them noticed the ancient symbol appearing faintly beneath Ariana's skin. A silver mark. A mark that had not existed before. A mark that only appeared when the moon chose its blood. And far away... every Alpha in the world felt it. The awakening had begun.
