The Hollow Awakens

The mountains were silent. Not peaceful. Silent in the way a predator becomes quiet before it attacks. The Black Moon group continued their journey toward the ancient fortress, but the atmosphere had changed. Ariana had not spoken about the message she received. Kael had noticed. Of course he had. He noticed everything about her now. The way she avoided his eyes. The way her hand moved toward the mark whenever she was thinking. The way she became quiet when something frightened her. And that bothered him more than any enemy. Because he could fight an enemy. He could not fight what was happening inside her. --- "You saw something." Kael's voice broke the silence. Ariana looked at him. They were walking behind the others, surrounded by tall mountains and endless snow. "Do you always know when someone is hiding something?" "No." A pause. "I know when you are." She looked away. "Maybe I'm learning from you." Kael stopped walking. Ariana continued for a few steps before realizing he wasn't beside her. She turned. "What?" "You think I hide things." She raised an eyebrow. "Do you not?" He had no response. Because she was right. Again. --- "I saw a message." Kael's expression changed. "From who?" "I don't know." "Where?" "In the forest." "Why didn't you tell me?" Ariana looked at him. "Because I knew you would try to protect me." "Yes." The answer was immediate. She sighed. "That is exactly the problem." Kael looked frustrated. "You think I protect you because I believe you are weak." "Don't you?" "No." The force in his voice surprised her. "You are many things, Ariana." He stepped closer. "But weak is not one of them." For a moment, neither moved. Then she asked quietly: "Then why?" Kael looked away. "Because every person I have failed to protect became a memory I carry." The honesty in his words silenced her. --- They reached the entrance of the mountain fortress before nightfall. The structure was enormous. Built directly into the mountain itself. Ancient stone walls. Symbols carved into every surface. Ariana felt the mark on her skin burn. "This place knows me." Seraphine looked at her. "No." Ariana frowned. "It knows what you carry." The distinction was important. And Ariana hated it. Because once again, everyone saw the Moonblood before they saw her. --- The entrance opened without anyone touching it. The warriors immediately prepared for attack. But nothing came. No guards. No traps. Only darkness. Kael raised his hand. Everyone stopped. "Stay close." They entered. The inside of the fortress was impossible. It should have been empty. Abandoned. But the torches along the walls ignited as they walked. As if the fortress had been waiting. Ariana whispered: "It knows we're here." Kael looked at her. "Yes." "How?" His eyes moved through the darkness. "Because it knows I am here." --- Deep inside the fortress, they reached a massive chamber. At its center stood a sealed door. Covered in chains. Ancient symbols surrounded it. Seraphine stopped. Her expression changed. "This is where they imprisoned it." Lucian looked at the chains. "And they expected this to hold forever?" Seraphine's voice was quiet. "No." Everyone looked at her. "They expected someone to come back." Ariana felt cold. "Who?" Seraphine looked at Kael. "The last Alpha." --- The chains began to move. Slowly. One by one. Breaking. The sound echoed through the chamber. The warriors stepped back. Kael moved forward. Ariana grabbed his arm. "Don't." He looked at her. "Why?" Because she knew. She had seen it. The battlefield. The blood. The loneliness. But she couldn't explain. "I don't know." Kael looked at her hand holding his arm. For a second, everything stopped. Then the final chain broke. The door opened. --- Darkness came first. Then a voice. "You are disappointing." The words were not loud. But they filled the entire chamber. A figure stepped forward. It looked almost human. Almost. Tall. Powerful. With eyes that held no warmth. No fear. No emotion. Only hunger. The Hollow. It looked at Kael. "Another Alpha." A smile appeared. "Another creature pretending control makes him strong." Kael's eyes turned gold. "You are not welcome here." The Hollow laughed. "Neither was I." A pause. "Yet your ancestors feared me enough to bury me." --- Then it looked at Ariana. Everything changed. The Hollow became still. "The Moonblood." Ariana felt the air become heavy. "You should not exist." She forced herself to stand straight. "Neither should you." For the first time... the Hollow looked surprised. Then it smiled. "Interesting." It stepped closer. "She has a voice." Kael moved in front of her. The Hollow watched him. "There it is." "What?" "The same mistake every Alpha makes." The creature tilted its head. "You protect." A pause. "You attach." Another pause. "And eventually..." Its eyes darkened. "...you break." --- Kael attacked first. The impact shook the chamber. The battle began. But Ariana knew something was wrong. Because the Hollow wasn't trying to win. It was testing him. Studying him. Waiting. And somehow... that was worse. --- The chamber trembled with every impact. Kael moved faster than Ariana had ever seen. Not like a man. Like something born for battle. His wolf was close to the surface, his golden eyes burning through the darkness. But the Hollow did not fight like a wolf. It did not rush. It did not lose control. It simply watched. And that terrified Ariana. Because it looked like it already knew how the fight would end. --- Kael struck again. The Hollow blocked the attack with one hand. One hand. The force pushed Kael backward across the stone floor. Lucian immediately moved forward. "Kael!" The Alpha stood again. His expression remained calm. But Ariana noticed the small signs. The tension in his shoulders. The anger in his eyes. The effort it took to remain in control. The Hollow noticed too. "You are stronger than the others." Kael stared at it. "Who are you?" The creature smiled. "I was what your ancestors wanted to become." A pause. "Perfect." --- Seraphine stepped forward. "Do not listen to it." The Hollow turned. "Still alive." The first Moonblood's expression hardened. "You should have remained buried." "And you should have remained forgotten." The words carried history. Pain. Betrayal. Ariana realized then. Seraphine was not just connected to the Hollow. She knew it. She had fought it before. "You know each other." Seraphine looked at Ariana. "Yes." "How?" The silence was answer enough. Ariana's eyes widened. "No." Seraphine closed her eyes. "I was the one who created it." --- The chamber went silent. Even Kael stopped. Ariana stared at her. "You created that?" Seraphine looked at the Hollow. "Not intentionally." The creature laughed softly. "She wanted to create a world without suffering." Its eyes moved toward Ariana. "She believed removing weakness would save everyone." A pause. "She removed everything that made them alive." Seraphine's voice became quiet. "I was wrong." --- The Hollow moved suddenly. Too fast. It appeared in front of Seraphine. Kael reacted instantly. Their attacks collided. The entire chamber shook. The Hollow looked amused. "You always protect." Kael's expression darkened. "That is what makes me an Alpha." "No." The creature pushed him back. "That is what makes you predictable." --- Ariana watched. The vision returned. Kael standing alone. Blood on his hands. Her voice accusing him. She finally understood. The prophecy was not showing what would happen. It was showing what could happen. A possible future. A warning. She couldn't let fear decide for her. The Moonblood mark burned. Not with pain. With power. "Ariana." Kael saw the change. She stepped forward. "No." His voice was immediate. "Stay back." She looked at him. "You can't fight everything alone." His expression changed. Because those were his own words. The words he had refused to accept. --- Ariana closed her eyes. She reached toward the power inside her. Not anger. Not fear. Connection. The same warmth she had felt before. The chamber responded. The ancient symbols on the walls began to glow. The Hollow stopped. For the first time... it looked afraid. "No." The creature stepped back. "Impossible." Seraphine whispered: "The Moon has chosen." --- Ariana opened her eyes. Silver light surrounded her. But she didn't feel like a weapon. She felt like herself. The Hollow stared at her. "You don't understand what you are." Ariana looked at it. "Maybe not." A pause. "But I know what I'm not." The light grew stronger. "I am not yours." --- The Hollow roared. The sound shook the mountain. Every warrior fell back. But Ariana remained standing. Because the power was not fighting for her. It was responding to her. A choice. Not a command. Not destiny. A choice. --- Kael watched her. And in that moment, he understood. The Moonblood was never meant to be controlled. Not by Alphas. Not by enemies. Not even by prophecy. She was meant to choose. And Ariana had chosen herself. --- The Hollow disappeared into the shadows of the chamber. Not defeated. Not destroyed. Only forced back. But before leaving, it looked at Kael. "This is not over." Then it looked at Ariana. "When the Alpha loses control..." A dark smile appeared. "...you will remember my warning." The darkness swallowed it. --- The chamber became quiet again. Ariana's power faded. And suddenly, exhaustion hit her. Kael caught her before she fell. For a moment, neither spoke. "You scared me." Ariana looked up. "You?" His jaw tightened. "Yes." She almost smiled. "I thought Alphas didn't admit fear." "Neither did I." The honesty between them felt different now. Stronger. --- Seraphine approached slowly. "The Hollow is awake." Lucian looked toward the broken door. "Then what happens next?" The first Moonblood looked at Ariana. "The clans will come." Kael's expression hardened. "Let them." Seraphine shook her head. "No." Everyone looked at her. "Because they won't come to fight." A pause. "They will come to choose." --- Far away, across the hidden world of werewolves, every Alpha felt the awakening. The ancient power. The return of the Hollow. And the existence of the Moonblood. One by one... the clans began moving. The war had not started. Not yet. But the pieces were already in place.
