The First Moonblood

The archive felt colder than before. Ariana stood between ancient shelves, staring at the woman who had just changed everything she thought she knew. The first Moonblood. It sounded impossible. Yet nothing about this world seemed impossible anymore. Kael remained motionless. For the first time since Ariana had met him, he looked uncertain. Not because he was afraid of the woman. Because he knew exactly what her existence meant. "You disappeared." The woman's silver eyes softened. "I did." Kael's voice became sharper. "Thousands of years ago." "Yes." "Then how are you here?" The woman looked toward Ariana. "Because she awakened the path." Ariana frowned. "The path?" The woman stepped closer. "My name is Seraphine." Ariana studied her. "You said you are the first Moonblood." Seraphine nodded. "The first to carry the blood. The first to awaken the bond between humans and wolves." Kael's expression hardened. "Moonbloods were never human." Seraphine looked at him. "That is what your clans decided to believe." The words created silence. Ariana noticed it immediately. There were secrets. More secrets. Everyone seemed to have them. --- "Explain." Kael's command filled the room. Seraphine did not react. That alone told Ariana how powerful she must be. Most people would have lowered their eyes. Seraphine simply looked at him like an equal. "The first wolves were not born from a curse." She walked toward the ancient wall covered in symbols. "They were created through a bond between the moon's energy and human souls." Ariana listened carefully. "The first Alphas were not conquerors. They were guardians." She touched the old symbol. "Their purpose was to protect the balance between worlds." Kael crossed his arms. "And what changed?" Seraphine looked at him. "Power." One word. Simple. Dangerous. "Every generation after the first wanted more. Stronger wolves. Larger territories. Absolute control." Her eyes moved toward Ariana. "The Moonblood was created as a reminder." "A reminder of what?" "That wolves were never meant to rule alone." --- Ariana looked between them. "So what am I?" Nobody answered immediately. That frightened her more than any answer could have. Finally, Seraphine spoke. "You are a bridge." Ariana shook her head. "No." Her voice was firm. "I'm not some magical object created to fix everyone else's problems." A faint smile appeared on Seraphine's face. "Good." Ariana frowned. "Good?" "That is exactly why you were chosen." Kael watched her carefully. Chosen. That word bothered him. Because it suggested Ariana's destiny existed before she ever had a choice. And he hated that. --- Later that evening, Kael found Ariana outside the manor. She stood beneath the moonlight, looking at the forest. "You knew." She didn't turn around. Kael stopped behind her. "Knew what?" "That something was different about me." Silence. Ariana laughed quietly. "I hate when silence answers questions." Kael looked at the ground. "I suspected." "That's not the same thing." "No." He admitted it. "I should have told you." "Yes." Her honesty surprised him. Most people softened their words around him. Ariana never did. "I was trying to protect you." She turned toward him. "Everyone keeps saying that." Her eyes met his. "But sometimes protection feels a lot like a cage." The words hit him. Because he understood. He had spent his entire life building walls around himself. Around his emotions. Around his pain. Around his wolf. And now someone was telling him those walls could become a prison. --- For a moment, neither spoke. The distance between them felt smaller. Kael could hear her heartbeat. He could smell the rain in her hair. He could feel the impossible pull that had haunted him since the first night. His wolf moved beneath his skin. Not demanding. Waiting. Ariana noticed the change in his expression. "What are you thinking?" Kael looked away. "That you ask dangerous questions." A small smile touched her lips. "And you avoid dangerous answers." For the first time in a long time... Kael almost laughed. Almost. --- Inside the manor, Seraphine watched them through the window. Miriam stood beside her. "You believe he is the one." Seraphine remained silent. "The last Alpha." Seraphine looked at Kael and Ariana beneath the moon. "No." Miriam looked surprised. "No?" Seraphine shook her head. "He is not the last Alpha." A pause. "He is the first Alpha to be given a choice." --- Far away, Darian Voss received a message. The messenger lowered his head. "The first Moonblood has returned." Darian closed his eyes. For the first time, even he looked uncertain. "Then the old stories were true." "What do we do?" Darian looked toward the Black Moon territory. "We prepare." "Against Kael?" Darian's expression turned cold. "No." A pause. "Against what comes after him." --- That night, the moon shone brighter than it had in centuries. The old powers had awakened. The clans would soon choose their sides. And Ariana Blackwell finally understood the truth. She had not discovered the world of werewolves. The world of werewolves had been waiting for her. The next morning, Black Moon Manor was no longer a place of uncertainty. It was a place of preparation. The arrival of Seraphine had changed everything. The elders gathered. The warriors trained. The archives were opened. Secrets that had remained buried for centuries were finally being brought into the light. But Ariana noticed one thing. Everyone was afraid. Not of her. Of what her existence meant. Ariana stood inside the training hall, watching the warriors practice. The speed. The strength. The discipline. A part of her still couldn't believe any of this was real. A few days ago, she was living an ordinary life. Now she was surrounded by creatures stronger than any human, carrying a mark connected to an ancient bloodline. It was overwhelming. "You are thinking too much." She turned. Kael stood nearby. "Is that another Alpha ability?" "What?" "Knowing when someone is overthinking." A faint amusement appeared in his eyes. "No." "Then how?" "Because you have the same expression every time you discover something you don't like." Ariana looked away. "You make it sound like I'm difficult." "You are." She looked back at him. "That was not supposed to be a compliment." "It wasn't." A pause. "But I respect it." The honesty surprised her. Kael didn't give compliments. Not easily. Seraphine entered the training hall. The entire room became quiet. Even the strongest warriors lowered their heads. Ariana noticed. "You really are important." Seraphine looked at her. "Importance is a dangerous thing." "Why?" "Because people confuse it with ownership." The answer stayed with Ariana. Because that was exactly what everyone had been doing. Seeing her as a prophecy. A solution. A weapon. Very few people saw her as Ariana. "We need to train her." Kael's voice was firm. Ariana immediately looked at him. "Excuse me?" "You need to learn control." "I don't have powers." Seraphine shook her head. "You do." Ariana looked at her. "Then why don't I feel them?" "Because you have spent your entire life denying something you never understood." That answer irritated Ariana. "That is not helpful." Seraphine smiled slightly. "Good." Ariana sighed. "Why does everyone here like saying things that make me more confused?" Lucian, standing nearby, quietly answered: "Because apparently confusing humans is an ancient werewolf tradition." Ariana looked at him. "Thank you. Finally, someone admits it." Lucian smiled. "I try to be useful." Training began that afternoon. Not with fighting. With control. Seraphine instructed Ariana to focus on the mark. "Your power does not come from anger." Ariana closed her eyes. "Then what does it come from?" "Connection." She frowned. "Connection?" "The Moonblood does not destroy. It restores." Ariana tried again. Slowly, she felt it. A warmth. A pulse. Like a second heartbeat. The air around her changed. The candles in the room flickered. The warriors watched silently. Kael watched the most. Because he felt something he had never felt before. Not fear. Recognition. Then everything went wrong. Ariana suddenly gasped. A vision hit her. Not like before. Stronger. Violent. She saw fire. The Black Moon Manor burning. Wolves fighting each other. Kael standing alone in the middle of a battlefield. Blood covering his hands. And a voice. A voice she recognized. Her own. "You chose the crown over me." Ariana screamed. The vision ended. She fell. Kael caught her instantly. "Ariana." She opened her eyes. Her breathing was uneven. "What did you see?" She looked at him. And for the first time... she was afraid of him. "I saw the future." The room became silent. Kael's expression tightened. "What future?" Ariana swallowed. "The one where you destroy everything." Nobody spoke. Not even Seraphine. Because visions from the Moonblood were never random. They were warnings. Or promises. Kael slowly released Ariana. Not because he wanted to. Because he was afraid. Afraid that the vision was true. Afraid that no matter what he did... his destiny had already been written. That night, Kael stood alone in the courtyard. The same place where Ariana had stopped him during the attack. The same place where the Blood Moon had awakened. Lucian found him there. "You believe her vision." Kael didn't answer. "Kael." "I don't know." The words were almost impossible for him to say. "I have spent my entire life protecting this clan." He looked at his hands. "What if I am the thing they need protection from?" Lucian became quiet. Because for the first time... the strongest Alpha he had ever known sounded broken. Inside the manor, Ariana watched Kael from the window. She didn't know what scared her more. The vision... or the fact that she didn't want it to come true. Because despite everything... despite the secrets... despite the danger... she believed there was still something good inside him. Something worth saving. And that terrified her. Far away, beneath an abandoned mountain fortress, a hidden chamber opened. An ancient creature awakened. Older than the clans. Older than the Alphas. A voice echoed through the darkness. "The Moonblood has returned." A pair of golden eyes opened. "And the last Alpha will rise."
