The Alpha's Shadow

The prophecy changed everything. Before Ariana arrived, Kael Vargan had believed his greatest responsibility was protecting his clan from enemies outside their walls. Now he wondered if the greatest threat had always been inside him. The vision followed him everywhere. The burning manor. The battlefield. Ariana's voice. You chose the crown over me. He hated that part the most. Not because it showed him as a monster. Because it showed him as someone who had made a choice. A choice that hurt her. --- The council chamber was louder than it had been in years. Some wanted Ariana removed from the territory. Some wanted her protected. Others wanted to use her power before rival clans could reach her. Kael listened silently. Until one elder spoke the thought everyone was afraid to say. "The Moonblood cannot be allowed to influence the Alpha." The room went quiet. Kael slowly turned. "Explain." The elder lowered his gaze. "An Alpha must lead with reason. Not emotion." Everyone understood the meaning. They were talking about Ariana. Kael's expression became cold. "Are you suggesting she controls me?" "No." A pause. "We are suggesting that your feelings for her may." The words created tension. Lucian immediately stepped forward. "Careful." But Kael stopped him. Because anger would only prove their point. Instead, Kael looked around the room. "You forget something." His voice was calm. "An Alpha is not a machine." The elders remained silent. "I do not lead because I have no emotions." He looked toward the ancient symbols carved into the walls. "I lead because I know how to control them." --- Ariana heard the conversation from the hallway. She hadn't meant to listen. But she heard enough. Enough to understand. She was becoming a problem. Not because she was weak. Because she mattered. And that scared everyone. Including Kael. --- Later that evening, Ariana found Seraphine in the garden. The first Moonblood was sitting beneath the old trees, watching the moon. "You knew." Seraphine looked up. "About what?" "That they would blame me." A sad smile appeared. "Yes." "Then why bring me here?" "Because hiding never saved anyone." Ariana sat beside her. "Tell me something." "What?" "Did the others survive?" Seraphine's expression changed. The question was simple. The answer was not. "No." Ariana went still. "What happened?" "They were protected by those who loved them." A pause. "And destroyed by those who feared them." The coldness in her voice made Ariana understand. "The clans." "Yes." "They killed them?" "Not all." Seraphine looked at the moon. "But every Moonblood before you lost something." Ariana looked down. "What did they lose?" Seraphine answered softly: "Their choice." --- That night, Ariana couldn't sleep. She kept thinking about those words. Their choice. Everyone kept telling her about destiny. About prophecy. About what she was supposed to become. But nobody asked what she wanted. She walked through the manor until she reached the training hall. Kael was there. Alone. Of course he was. He was always carrying something by himself. "You don't sleep either?" He looked at her. "Not often." "Because you're an Alpha?" "Because I'm Kael." The answer surprised her. Ariana stepped closer. "You know, sometimes I forget there is a person behind all of this." Kael looked away. "Most people prefer the Alpha." "I don't." The words were quiet. But they affected him. --- For a moment, they simply stood there. No prophecy. No clans. No enemies. Just two people trapped inside a world neither of them chose. "I saw something in that vision." Kael looked at her. "What?" "You." His expression changed. "What about me?" Ariana hesitated. "You looked like someone who had lost everything." Silence. "And I don't think you were evil." Kael's eyes softened slightly. "But?" "But I think you were alone." Those words reached deeper than she knew. Because loneliness was something Kael understood better than anyone. --- Ariana noticed the exhaustion in his face. "You don't have to carry everything." Kael almost smiled. "That sounds like something you would say." "Because it's true." "For an Alpha, it isn't that simple." "Maybe that's the problem." He looked at her. "What?" "Maybe everyone expects Alphas to be strong all the time." Ariana stepped closer. "But nobody remembers they are still people." The silence between them became different. Warriors. Prophecies. Clans. Everything disappeared for a moment. Kael lifted his hand slowly, almost as if asking permission. Ariana didn't move away. But before he could touch her— A loud howl shattered the night. Not from the manor. From beyond the borders. A warning. A challenge. Kael's expression changed instantly. The Alpha returned. Lucian rushed into the hall. "Kael." "What happened?" His face was serious. "The mountain fortress." Kael froze. "The one from the old legends?" Lucian nodded. "It opened." Ariana felt the mark on her skin burn. Seraphine appeared behind them. And for the first time since arriving... she looked afraid. "The first enemy has awakened." --- Far beneath the mountains, ancient chains broke. Something that had waited centuries opened its eyes. And the first words it spoke were: "Find the Moonblood." A pause. "Kill the Alpha." The entire manor felt the change. Every wolf inside Black Moon territory sensed it. Not a normal enemy. Not a rival clan. Something older. Something that did not follow the laws of wolves. The warriors gathered in the main hall, waiting for Kael's command. But for the first time in years, the Alpha did not speak immediately. Because even he knew this was different. --- "The mountain fortress has been sealed for five centuries." Miriam's voice was quiet. The elders stood around the ancient map spread across the table. "No one was supposed to enter." Lucian looked at her. "Then how did it open?" Miriam's eyes moved toward Ariana. The answer was clear. The Moonblood. Ariana noticed. "So everything is connected to me." Kael immediately turned. "No." "But it is." "No." His voice was firmer. "You are not responsible for every darkness that existed before you." The room became silent. Because everyone heard it. Not just protection. A defense. Kael was defending Ariana. Again. --- Miriam pointed toward the map. "The fortress was built by the first Alphas." Ariana looked closer. "Why?" "To imprison something they could not destroy." "What?" Nobody answered. That worried her. Finally, Seraphine spoke. "The Hollow." The name itself felt wrong. Like something that should not be said aloud. "What is the Hollow?" Seraphine looked toward the dark window. "A creature created when the first wolves tried to separate power from humanity." Ariana frowned. "Meaning?" "The first wolves had two sides." Seraphine explained. "The human soul and the wolf instinct existed together." She paused. "But some believed emotions were weaknesses." Kael's expression changed. "They tried to remove them." Seraphine nodded. "They created something pure." Lucian whispered: "Pure power." "Yes." Seraphine looked at Ariana. "And no humanity." --- Ariana felt a chill. "So the Hollow is a wolf without a soul." Seraphine shook her head. "No." Everyone looked at her. "It is worse." The room became still. "It is a soul that believes it no longer needs humanity." --- The decision was made. Kael would travel to the mountain fortress. Not because he wanted to. Because if the Hollow was awake, waiting would only allow it to grow stronger. "I am coming." Ariana's voice cut through the room. Kael turned immediately. "No." She crossed her arms. "You knew I was going to say that." "Yes." "And?" "No." She stared at him. "You really think that works?" "Usually." "Not with me." A few warriors looked away, hiding their reactions. Nobody challenged Kael. Except her. And somehow... he allowed it. --- "You don't know what you're walking into." Ariana stepped closer. "Neither do you." "I am an Alpha." "And I am the person everyone is fighting over." Kael went silent. She continued: "If I stay here, they will come for me anyway." Her eyes held his. "But if I go with you, maybe we find out why." Kael hated that she was right. More than that... he hated that he trusted her. Finally, he spoke. "You stay beside me." Ariana raised an eyebrow. "That's your compromise?" "It's the only one you're getting." A small smile appeared on her face. "Fine." --- The journey began at sunset. Only a small group went. Kael. Lucian. Ariana. Seraphine. And several of the strongest warriors of Black Moon. The forest became darker as they traveled. The closer they got to the mountains, the quieter the world became. No birds. No animals. Nothing. Even nature seemed afraid. --- During the night, they stopped near a river. Ariana sat beside the fire, watching Kael sharpen his weapon. "You really think this thing can be defeated?" Kael didn't look up. "Yes." "You sound certain." "I have to." She studied him. "That's not the same as believing it." Kael stopped. Ariana had a way of seeing things he tried to hide. "I have fought many enemies." He looked at the flames. "But this one is different." "Why?" "Because it represents something every Alpha fears." "What?" Kael's voice became quiet. "Losing himself." --- Ariana looked at him. The prophecy. The vision. Everything connected. "The future I saw..." Kael looked at her. "What about it?" "You weren't fighting someone else." A pause. "You were fighting yourself." For the first time, Kael had no answer. Because he had realized the same thing. The Hollow was not only a creature. It was a warning. A possible future. --- That night, while everyone slept, Ariana woke up. The mark on her skin was glowing. Someone was calling to her. Not with words. With memories. She followed the feeling into the forest. And there she found something impossible. A stone altar. Covered in ancient symbols. And carved into the center was a message. A message written thousands of years ago. But meant for her. "When the last Alpha rises, the Moonblood must choose." Ariana touched the stone. The world disappeared. And she heard a voice. A voice that sounded exactly like her own. "Do not save him." Ariana froze. "If you save the Alpha..." The voice became darker. "...you will lose yourself." --- Behind her, a figure stepped from the shadows. Kael. His eyes reflected the moonlight. "Ariana." She turned. And he immediately knew. Something had happened. "What did you see?" She looked at him. Unable to answer. Because the prophecy had given her a choice. But every choice had a cost. --- Far away, inside the mountain fortress, the Hollow opened its eyes. It smiled. Because it had felt her fear. And soon... it would feel her power.
