The Hidden Bloodline

The Black Moon Manor had never felt so silent. Not even during the darkest nights of war. Kael Vargan stood in the great hall, looking through the tall windows toward the forest beyond the estate. The ancient trees moved with the wind, their branches reaching toward the dark sky like frozen hands. The clan was restless. They could feel it. Every wolf in the territory had sensed the awakening. Something old had returned. Something that had been sleeping beneath the surface for centuries. And Kael knew exactly where it had begun. With Ariana Blackwell. "You should tell the council." Lucian's voice interrupted his thoughts. Kael didn't turn. "They already know enough." "They know a rogue attacked a human." Lucian stepped closer. "They don't know that she has a connection to an ancient prophecy." Kael's expression hardened. "Because I don't know that either." Lucian studied him. "You felt something." Silence. That was answer enough. Lucian sighed. "Kael." "No." The Alpha's voice was low. "Don't start." "You can't pretend nothing happened." Kael finally faced him. "What do you want me to say?" Lucian held his gaze. "That you're afraid." For a moment, the room became completely still. An ordinary wolf would never say those words to an Alpha. But Lucian was not ordinary. He knew the man beneath the title. Kael looked away. "I don't fear enemies." "I know." Lucian's voice softened. "You fear losing control." That hit closer than any blade could. Because it was true. An Alpha's greatest strength was control. The ability to command the beast inside. The ability to separate instinct from reason. But Ariana had appeared, and for the first time in years, Kael's wolf had chosen something before he did. Ariana sat inside the guest room of Black Moon Manor, staring at the unfamiliar surroundings. She still wasn't sure how she had agreed to come here. Actually, she wasn't sure she had agreed at all. Kael had simply told her she was safer inside the clan territory. And somehow... she had followed him. Which annoyed her. A lot. She looked around the room. Everything about the manor felt old. Not abandoned. Ancient. The walls carried history. The furniture looked like it had survived generations. There were no modern decorations, no signs of technology except a few hidden details. It was a place caught between centuries. Like the people who lived there. Ariana stood and walked toward the mirror. For a moment, she barely recognized herself. Yesterday, she was a researcher chasing myths. Today, she was a human surrounded by werewolves. Her hand moved unconsciously toward her neck. A strange warmth had been there since the attack. She looked closer. A faint silver mark appeared beneath her skin. Her heart stopped. "What is that?" She touched it. The moment her fingers made contact, a sudden wave of images rushed through her mind. A forest beneath a full moon. A woman standing among wolves. A blood-red sky. A voice whispering: "The moon remembers its daughter." Ariana stumbled backward. The vision disappeared. She grabbed the edge of the table to steady herself. "What is happening to me?" Deep beneath the manor, the oldest members of the Black Moon Clan gathered. The council chamber had not been opened in years. That alone showed how serious the situation was. Elder Miriam Vale placed an ancient scroll on the stone table. "The mark has appeared." The elders exchanged worried looks. One of them shook his head. "It cannot be." Miriam looked at him. "And yet it is." "The Blood Moon prophecy was destroyed." "No." Her voice was calm. "It was hidden." The room fell silent. For generations, the clans had believed the prophecy was nothing more than an old story. A myth created to frighten young wolves. But Miriam knew better. She had spent her entire life protecting the truth. "The girl is not the danger," she said. "The power inside her is." Kael entered the council chamber moments later. All eyes turned toward him. He hated that. Not the attention. The expectations. Every person in this room wanted answers. They wanted certainty. But an Alpha did not always have answers. Sometimes he only had choices. "Tell me everything." Miriam looked at him. "The woman carries the Moonblood." Kael's expression remained unchanged. "What does that mean?" "It means she is connected to the first wolves." Lucian went silent. Even he had heard the stories. Kael narrowed his eyes. "Impossible." Miriam shook her head. "Many things are impossible until they happen." She moved closer. "The Moonblood is not a power. It is a legacy." "And what does it do?" The elder looked directly at him. "It awakens what was forgotten." A cold feeling moved through Kael. "What was forgotten?" Miriam's voice dropped. "The first Alpha." Outside the chamber, Ariana stood alone in the hallway. She had not meant to listen. But she had heard every word. The Moonblood. The first Alpha. A legacy. Her entire life had been built around finding hidden truths. Now she was one of them. And she wasn't sure whether that made her special... or doomed. The words followed Ariana long after she left the hallway. The first Alpha. The Moonblood. A legacy. She walked through the corridors of Black Moon Manor without knowing where she was going. For the first time in her life, knowledge did not make her feel powerful. It made her feel small. Every discovery she had ever made had been through research, patience, and logic. But this... This was different. This was personal. Ariana stopped beside one of the tall windows overlooking the forest. The trees stretched endlessly into the darkness. Somewhere out there were creatures she had spent years writing about as myths. And they weren't hiding because they were imaginary. They were hiding because they were real. "You shouldn't walk alone here." Kael's voice came from behind her. Ariana turned. She had not heard him approach. That bothered her. "You do that often?" "Do what?" "Appear out of nowhere." A faint expression crossed his face. "Usually people are grateful." "Usually people don't discover their entire understanding of reality was wrong in one night." Kael had no answer to that. For once. Ariana noticed. "You don't have to pretend you understand." "I don't." The honesty surprised her. Kael looked toward the forest. "The world you knew ended yesterday." His voice was quiet. "But the world that exists now was always there." Ariana studied him. "How long have you known?" "Known what?" "That people like you exist." Kael looked back at her. "All my life." She swallowed. "And humans?" "Most humans will never know." "Why?" "Because they would fear what they don't understand." Ariana gave a small, humorless smile. "Maybe they're right to fear it." Kael stepped closer. "Are you afraid of me?" The question caught her off guard. She expected confidence. Arrogance. Instead, he sounded genuinely curious. Ariana looked into his eyes. Those impossible golden eyes. "Yes." The answer was honest. Something changed in Kael's expression. "But..." She continued. "I don't think you're the thing I should be afraid of." For a moment, the Alpha said nothing. Those words affected him more than they should have. Ariana looked away first. "I want answers." "You'll get them." "When?" "When you're ready." Her eyes narrowed. "I decide that." A small spark of amusement appeared in his gaze. "There it is." "What?" "The part of you that refuses to obey." She crossed her arms. "Is that a problem?" "No." His answer was immediate. "It is unusual." "For a human?" "For anyone." The silence between them changed. Not uncomfortable. Something else. Something neither wanted to acknowledge. Kael noticed it first. The way her presence affected him. The way his wolf became calmer when she was near. It was dangerous. An Alpha could not allow himself distractions. Especially not one he couldn't explain. Later that night, Ariana was finally given access to the Black Moon archives. If there was one thing she understood, it was books. Old records. Hidden histories. She sat at a large wooden table surrounded by hundreds of years of werewolf history. Clan wars. Bloodlines. Ancient agreements. Her fingers moved across the pages carefully. Then she found it. A symbol. The same symbol from the manuscript. A crescent moon crossed by a line of blood. Below it were words written in an ancient language. But somehow... she understood them. "The Moon chooses its vessel." Her breathing slowed. Vessel. Not descendant. Not protector. Vessel. Ariana continued reading. The records described a woman who appeared every few centuries when the werewolf world faced extinction. A woman whose blood could awaken the first Alpha. A woman who could unite the clans... or destroy them. Ariana closed the book. "No." She whispered. She didn't want to be part of some ancient war. She didn't want power. She didn't want destiny. She just wanted the truth. But sometimes truth came with a price. Outside the archives, Kael stood in the shadows. He had not intended to follow her. That was what he told himself. But the truth was harder to accept. He wanted to make sure she was safe. He wanted to understand why his wolf reacted to her. And he wanted to know why the idea of losing her already felt unbearable. The thought irritated him. He had spent years becoming a man who needed nothing. No attachments. No weaknesses. No one could hurt him if no one mattered. Yet Ariana Blackwell had walked into his life carrying nothing but questions... and somehow she had already become the one question he could not ignore. A sound echoed through the manor. A warning howl. Kael's expression instantly changed. The Alpha returned. He moved toward the entrance. Lucian appeared seconds later. "Intruders." Kael's eyes turned gold. "How many?" "Too many." The entire manor came alive. Werewolves moved through the halls. Weapons were drawn. The ancient laws of peace had been broken. Again. Kael looked back once toward the archive. Toward Ariana. Then toward the darkness beyond the gates. Someone had found them. And this time... they had not come for war. They had come for her.
