One year later
Aki had no idea so many things had to be done in preparation for a wedding. He got around to proposing to Chi-Ling in a formal letter of betrothal. The second letter Mrs. Tvi had drafted was the gift letter, a document detailing the gifts the couple expected. The final letter was the wedding letter, which formally welcomed Chi-Ling into Aki’s family. They had already chosen March fifth as their date.
The engagement ceremony was held at Chi-Ling’s parents’ house with both families present. Aki gave Chi-Ling a diamond bracelet as a betrothal gift. She had lost some weight and the bracelet fitted her perfectly. Their parents also exchanged gifts afterwards. The Loas gave his parents imported tea and Aki’s parents gave the Loas an expensive bottle
