Chapter 9“What’s for breakfast?” Chi-Ling asked Aki.
Two more months had passed, but Chi-Ling continued to gain weight. For five months she was quite huge. Later, Aki would accompany her to her doctor’s appointment.
Doctor Lin was going to try to hear the baby’s heartbeat.
“Rice porridge, Greek yoghurt with blueberries, and scrambled egg whites.”
“Any bread or meat?” Chi-Ling asked.
“Not today.” He paused. “Are you sure you’re sticking to your diet?”
Chi-Ling went on the defensive. “Why would you ask that? You prepare all my meals.”
This was true, but he wasn’t around her twenty-four-seven. “It doesn’t seem like you’re losing any weight. Your hands and legs are still swollen. Maybe we should increase our walking time.”
“Maybe,” Chi-Ling said.
