"Hold your breath and stay down, Meira!"
Bisma roared the command, his voice booming over the deafening hum of the rising electronic pitch. He did not run toward the locked steel shutters, nor did he hesitate for a single second. Instead, he lunged to his right, his stiff, reconstructed fingers wrapping firmly around the heavy handle of a tactical steel shield resting against the concrete pillar.
He threw his body across the metal chair, positioning the massive reinforced shield directly above Meira's head and torso. He slammed his knees into the frozen floor, locking his boots against the concrete and using his broad frame to swallow her fragile body completely beneath the protective canopy of steel.
The digital timer hit absolute zero.
A blinding flash of orange light consumed the center of the warehouse. The explosive charge detonated with a thunderous roar, sending a superheated shockwave tearing across the concrete floor. The blast wave struck the underside of the tactical shield with violent force, lifting Bisma's heavy frame off the ground for a fraction of a second before slamming him hard into the solid ground.
Searing heat washed over Bisma's back, burning straight through the thick fabric of his dark suit jacket. Shrapnel rained down like lethal hail, striking the steel shield with deafening metallic clatters that echoed through his bones. His ears hummed with a high-pitched ring, the sheer atmospheric pressure of the blast threatening to crush his lungs.
He grit his teeth so hard his jaw locked, refusing to shift even an inch. Underneath him, Meira huddled tight, her trembling hands clutching at his blood-stained shirt while she hid her face against his chest. The military-grade pain blocker in his bloodstream fought against the sheer blunt force of the blast, but the violent impact still tore his fresh surgical stitches wide open.
Warm blood poured out from his chest and right thigh, pooling onto the icy floor beneath them, but Bisma held his position like an unyielding mountain until the roaring echoes of the explosion finally faded into the dark.
The air in the sealed warehouse thick with dense grey smoke, toxic cordite fumes, and floating concrete dust. The central light bulb had shattered completely, leaving the vast interior illuminated only by the flickering red embers of burning wooden pallets scattered across the room.
Bisma slowly pushed the heavy tactical shield aside, the metal clattering against the debris-littered floor. He grunted in pain, his chest heaving as he gasped for clear air through the thick smoke. He looked down at the woman beneath him.
"Are you hurt?" Bisma asked, his voice rough and rasping through the dust.
Meira opened her eyes slowly, blinking through the tears and grey ash covering her face. She looked at his pale, bloodied face, then down at his hands, which were covered in fresh crimson liquid.
"I am fine," Meira whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably as she sat up amidst the debris. "Bisma, you saved me. But you are bleeding everywhere."
"I am fine," he replied flatly, forcing his trembling legs to push his weight upward. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his tactical knife, slicing through the remaining frayed ropes binding her wrists to the broken metal chair. "Stand up. We cannot stay here."
Meira scrambled to her feet, clutching his arm for support as her knees buckled from shock. She stared at the destruction surrounding them. The central floor was cratered, the concrete torn up into jagged blocks, and the three syndicate operatives lay motionless amidst the burning wreckage.
"The doors locked before the blast," Meira said, pointing toward the heavy steel shutters covering the main exit. "How are we going to get out?"
Bisma did not answer with words. He walked toward the fallen lieutenant's body, ignoring the sharp, tearing sensations in his legs. He crouched down and searched the dead man's belt, retrieving a heavy brass master key along with a high-caliber sidearm and two spare magazines.
He dragged himself toward the manual override panel near the loading dock, inserting the brass key into the central slot and twisting it hard to the right.
With a loud pneumatic hiss, the heavy steel shutters began to grind slowly upward, exposing the cold, dark alleyway outside. The freezing night air of Zurich rushed into the burning room, clearing away the suffocating cloud of smoke and dust.
Bisma grabbed Meira's hand, pulling her out into the blinding white snow of the storm. They stumbled into the narrow alley, the freezing wind slapping their faces and instantly chilling the sweat and blood on their skin.
Across the city, inside a high-rise luxury penthouse overlooking the Limmat River, a red signal light flared on a master terminal console.
Zuan sat behind a polished mahogany desk, swirling a glass of amber scotch in his hand. He looked up at the digital monitor as an automated alert flashed across the screen, confirming the total detonation of the thermal trap at the west side warehouse.
A cold, satisfied smile spread across Zuan's face. He leaned forward, tapping his fingers against the glass desk as he picked up his encrypted communicator to call his chief security commander.
"The warehouse trap was triggered five minutes ago," Zuan said into the device, his tone smooth and dripping with arrogance. "The witness girl and whoever tried to pull her out are dead. Send a cleanup crew to sweep the ashes before dawn."
"Sir, we just received a live traffic camera feed from the west district alley," his commander replied, his voice laced with sudden hesitation. "You need to see this immediately."
Zuan's smile faded as a high-definition video window popped open on his central screen. The camera zoomed in on the snowy alleyway right outside the burning warehouse perimeter.
Through the swirling snowstorm, two figures emerged from the shadows. The camera captured a clear, crisp frame of the man leading the woman toward a hidden vehicle. His face was covered in concrete dust, a deep scar running along his jaw, and his eyes were burning with a lethal, terrifying focus.
Zuan's hand froze, the crystal glass of scotch slipping from his fingers and shattering onto the marble floor.
"Impossible," Zuan whispered, his face draining of all color as he stared at the screen. "I cut his femoral artery. I watched him freeze in the slaughterhouse. Bisma is dead!"
"It is him, Boss," the commander confirmed nervously over the line. "He is alive, and he just slaughtered your entire interrogation team in less than ten minutes."
Zuan stood up violently, kicking his heavy leather chair backward as pure fury replaced his initial shock. "He survived. The bastard actually broke his own bones to slip those chains."
He slammed his fist onto the mahogany desk, his breathing heavy and ragged as he realized the full scope of the threat. The quiet, hidden takeover of the syndicate throne was over. The man he had betrayed was back from the grave, walking the streets of his city like an unkillable ghost.
"Put every soldier we have on high alert," Zuan roared into the communicator. "Issue a five-million-dollar cash contract to every mercenary group in Switzerland. I want his head on a spike before the sun comes up!"
"What about the city council, sir?" the commander asked. "If we start a shooting war in the middle of Zurich, the corrupt police chief will not be able to cover for us."
"I do not care about the police or the council!" Zuan shouted, his eyes wide with rage. "Tell the police chief to lock down the entire western sector under the guise of an anti-terrorist hunt. If any officer gets in the way of killing Bisma, shoot them too!"
Miles away, in a dark subterranean alley in West Zurich, Bisma leaned heavily against the cold brick wall of an abandoned bakery. His face was slick with cold sweat, his vision pulsing dangerously as the shock of his reopened wounds began to override the military stimulants in his system.
Meira stood beside him, using a strip of cloth torn from her apron to wrap tightly around his bleeding forearm. "Bisma, you are losing too much blood. We need to find a hospital."
"No hospitals," Bisma replied through gritted teeth, his breathing ragged. "The city council and Zuan control every medical network in Zurich. If my name pops up on a register, Keller's agents will execute us both to protect their secrets."
"Then where are we going?" she asked, her voice cracking as she looked up into his dark eyes. "We cannot stay on the streets. Zuan will mobilize the entire syndicate once he realizes you are alive."
Bisma reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out the small, encrypted frequency receiver he had taken from the hotel. The device blinked steadily, displaying a series of private, unmapped underground routes running beneath the old city.
"We go deep into the Under-Zurich," Bisma said, his voice cold and resolute. "We do not hide anymore, Meira. We build a shadow."
He looked down the dark, snow-covered alleyway toward the main avenue, where the distant wails of police sirens were already beginning to echo through the night air. The city was waking up, but it was not the law coming to save them. It was a net of corrupt authority closing in from all sides.
"Zuan thinks he owns this city because he has the money and the council in his pocket," Bisma muttered, his hand gripping the sidearm securely. "He took my life, my honor, and he tried to take you. Now I am going to tear his empire down brick by brick."
Meira looked at the blood dripping onto the white snow beneath his boots, then back up at his unyielding face. She saw no trace of the gentle man she once knew; in his place stood a relentless force forged by betrayal and pain.
"I will help you," Meira said softly, her chin lifting in determination. "I know the service routes and the hotel network better than anyone. If we are going to fight them, we do it together."
Bisma looked at her for a long moment, a faint flicker of warmth passing through his hardened eyes before the coldness returned. He nodded slowly, gesturing toward a heavy iron maintenance grate embedded in the alley floor.
He pulled the heavy iron grate open, revealing a dark, concrete staircase descending into the subterranean drainage systems beneath the city streets.
Before he stepped down into the darkness, Bisma paused, listening to the swelling chorus of police sirens echoing across the frozen skyline of Zurich. The covert mission was dead. The silence was broken.
He turned his head toward Meira, his dark eyes glittering with absolute, dangerous resolve.
"The war for Zurich has just begun, Meira, and I will not stop until Zuan is burning in the ground."
