Marcus's POV
If you would have told me this morning that today was the day I would have found my mate, a girl that randomly showed up on my pack lands with no memory, I would’ve told you that you had lost your goddamn mind. This was not supposed to happen. I had a plan on what to do if I ever ran into my mate. Straight up rejection. I wasn’t even going to give an explanation on why I was doing it, just reject her and get the hell out of dodge. But of course, I have no control over my own f*****g destiny. Thanks a lot Moon Goodness.
“Ummmm… What did you want to talk about?” Her sweet voice interrupted my thoughts, reminding me of why I came into her room in the first place.
“I just had a couple of questions for you.” She placed the plate that had held the sandwich on the end table next to the bed, and moved her back against the headboard to get in more of a comfortable position. I followed suit, swinging my legs on the bed in a criss cross fashion.
“Ok, ask away!” She gave me a smile that made her dark green eyes shine and managed to steal my breath away. I felt Xavier stir within me. Unlike me, my wolf was overjoyed in finding our mate. He was already wanting to fully mate and mark her.
“Are you hundred percent sure you can’t remember anything?” I asked her.
“I have absolutely no memory prior to waking up in the clearing.” She stopped talking for a few seconds to contemplate on what to say and then continued. “I guess that’s technically not true. Before I woke up, I felt like I was just swimming in darkness. I couldn’t see anything or remember anything. I was completely and utterly alone. I thought I had died.” She sucked in a shaky breath and broke eye contact with me. She was clearly more upset by this than I originally thought.
Perhaps we should comfort mate.
No, she’s a big girl. She can comfort herself. I said back to Xavier. Of course he would want to comfort her, he was already smitten with her.
Stupid human. He said
Stupid wolf. I replied, with a mental smirk. Xavier growled slightly in annoyance with me.
Xavier and I usually agreed on anything and everything, with the exception of the mate topic. It was important for the human and wolf to bond and have a relationship, but it’s even more vividly important for an Alpha human and Alpha wolf to bond and agree on things. Otherwise, the pack could end up in turmoil.
“Alpha Marcus you there?” A shiver ran through my whole body at the sound of her voice.
“Marcus.” I replied to her. Her milky, flawless face twisted in confusion.
“Um…?”
“Sorry! Uhh, I meant you can just call me Marcus, no need to use the Alpha part.” I chuckled nervously. What the hell was going on with me? I haven’t been this nervous with a girl since the first time I had s*x. I usually oozed confidence with the opposite gender. I mean I definitely wasn’t sleeping around with every she-wolf I came across, but I certainly wasn’t inexperienced.
“Oh, ok then. So... did you have any other questions for me Marcus?” As soon as she said my name, explicit images flashed through my mind of her saying it in a very different manner than just now. I really need to get out of this room before I loose all my self control. How the hell am I supposed to interact with her if I can’t even manage to have a simple conversation without having the need to take her to my bed, and have my wicked way with her?
Fuck self control. Let’s take her right here right now. You know you want too just as much as I do. Xavier said, not helping the situation at all.
I chose to ignore Xavier and instead said, “It’s kind of hard to ask you the questions I normally would ask trespassers, due to you not having any memories.”
“Do you get a lot of trespassers?” She asked me.
“Not as much as other packs have to deal with. The trespassers are technically called rogues and they know not to f**k with me.” A sense of pride filled my chest when I said that.
When I took the Alpha title from my father, my pack was struggling to survive since he never recovered from my mother’s death. The loss of your mate is unbearable. It can make even the strongest Alpha fall to his knees, which is why I never wanted a mate. My pack has become the strongest pack in the world. I would never jeopardize that and put my pack back to where they could hardly defend themselves against our enemies.
“Wait a second, there are other packs?! And what the hell is a rook?” She asked me, with her green eyes wide as they possibly could get.
I chuckled before responding to her. “First of all it’s called a rogue. R-O-G-U-E. Basically, it’s a lone wolf. A lot of them have been banished from their original packs or have left for whatever reason. Sometimes they will accidentally stray into pack land. However, there have been times where they group up and will purposely attack a pack causing innocent pack members to die. Some Alpha’s will take pity on rogues and offer them a place in their pack. I am not one of those Alpha’s. Rogues know that it’s an automatic death sentence if they stray onto my land, on purpose or not. And to answer your other question, yes, there are other packs out there across the world. Us Alpha’s are extremely territorial, so no packs are placed close together.”
“Wait a second, does this mean you’re going to kill me now since I somehow wandered onto your land?” I could smell the fear that began to coat her naturally intoxicating smell.
They say your mate’s scent will be your favorite smell in the world, it will appeal to you in a way no other scent will. And f**k, they weren’t kidding. Her scent really had become my favorite. She smelled exactly like the forest does after it rained all day. I always go for a run after a day like that. The wet earthy smell always seems to calm me and put my mind at ease. Whenever I take a deep inhale of her scent, those exact feelings wash over me. Resisting this stupid mate bond was definitely going to be alot harder than I thought.
“NO! I’m not going to kill you. I know we just met, and you have no reason to trust me, but you are completely safe here Em. Nobody will hurt you. I will make sure of it. Besides, you are human so there is no reason to kill you….yet.” I winked at her and chuckled. She forced an extremely small smile back at me, obviously not finding any humor in what I just said to her.
“Sorry, I was trying to lighten up the mood and ease the sudden tension. Clearly, I am not very good at that.” I scratched the back of my neck, a nervous habit of mine. She probably thinks I am a total weirdo.
“It’s ok. I am really glad you aren’t planning on slicing and dicing me today.” She said with a small laugh and wink.
“Nah, too messy. Probably just go for the classic neck break. Fast, easy, and no mess to clean afterwards. It’s honestly my preferred method of handling difficult people.”
“Wow! You weren’t kidding, you are bad at this whole humor thing.”
I cringed at what she said. Great, now she most likely thinks I am a psychopath. I wanted to die right here at this very moment.
Like I said earlier, stupid human.
Yeah, I have to agree with you on that. Not one of my best moments in life.
Xavier is surely never going to let me forget about this moment. Hell, I’m definitely not going to let myself forget my cringy ass attempt at being funny. I needed to get out of here before I embarrassed myself even more.
“Uh, I probably should just go and let you get some rest. You’ve had quite the day.” I reached for the plate on the bedside table at the same time she did. Our hands touched, and the most amazing shock went through my entire body. It made my southern region fully awake and at attention. This f*****g mate bond is going to be the death of me.
A gasp came out of Em’s mouth, making me look back at her. Pure shock and bliss filled up her entire face.
“What was that?!”
