Chapter Five --1--As they came down the hill from the woods behind the house, they saw a self-satisfied cat sitting in a patch of sunlight. Although Yardena was still damp from the dousing she had received at lunch, they stopped to look at it. "Do you think we might be able to keep it for a few days?" Yardena asked. "What would it eat?" said Thane. "He would know," said Barengaria. They remembered the kitten. They turned away and went down through the storm door into their comfortable basement. They hung their coats and set out their books. Barengaria settled herself on a sawhorse, ankles and knees together, back straight. Yardena copied her sister silently. Thane sat awkwardly on his stool, protecting his sore coccyx. They held hands for a moment as they always did -- seance or praye
