Chapter 1

419 Words
My name is Maya Blackwood. I was born in the Pacific Northwest. My mother died during childbirth, so I never knew her. Growing up being raised by my father, he made sure that every memory and special moment that my parents had was passed down to me, so even though I never actually got to meet my mother, I didn’t feel that I missed out. I loved my father dearly. A strict but fair man who wore his heart on his sleeve. I never wanted anything growing up. Education was my father’s priority. He always told me, “A good education was a great foundation for life.” Every morning, we sat for breakfast. Matt, dad’s right-hand man, or in our world we call him a beta, joined us. You see, my dad, Alec Blackwood, was Alpha of the Crimson Valley pack. Matt is like my second father, always the voice of reason, especially when Dad and I didn’t see eye to eye. Cool, calm and collected with a side order of banter in everything he does, that was my uncle Matt. Matt was married to Aunt Betty, not really my aunt, but loved me like a niece from the day I was born. They were never able to have children of their own. Aunt Betty was the one who was there for all my firsts as a woman. The one who explained about my first heat, my duties as a future Luna, what would be expected of me and how to care for my pack. “Are you ready yet or are we sitting here for another 20 minutes daydreaming that Damon is going to magically realise that he’s your mate?” “We’ll be late again and I cannot afford another mark against me; I’m already on thin ice at home as it is.” that’s Jenny my best friend since we were pups. Jenny had a point that we’ve been late a few times this term and Mr. Birdhill already has it out for us. As we reached the bottom of the staircase, we could hear the familiar thump-thump-thump sound that let us know Damon had arrived to pick us up for school. “Bye Dad, Bye uncle Matt,” I blew a kiss in their direction while running out the door, so Dad couldn’t stop and lecture me on the importance of proper timekeeping again. Instead, it was Uncle Matt’s infectious laugh and the usual “what you gonna do, that’s teens for you”
