Chapter 7: A Blast from the Past
Ella's heart sank as she opened the door to her apartment. Standing in the doorway, with a smug expression on his face, was her ex-boyfriend Alex.
"Alex, what are you doing here?" Ella asked, trying to keep her cool.
Alex smirked, his eyes scanning the apartment. "I heard you were living in this quaint little town. I had to see it for myself."
Ella felt a surge of anger. "How did you find me?" she demanded.
Alex shrugged. "It wasn't hard. You're not exactly hiding."
Ella's eyes narrowed. "What do you want, Alex?"
Alex's expression turned serious. "I want to talk to you about us. About what happened between us."
Ella felt a wave of nausea wash over her. "There is no us, Alex. We're over."
Alex took a step closer, his eyes locked on hers. "I know I hurt you, Ella. But I've realized my mistakes. I want a second chance."
Ella laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. "You think I'd ever take you back? After everything you did to me?"
Alex's face fell, but he quickly recovered. "I know I was wrong, Ella. But I've changed. I promise."
Ella shook her head. "I don't believe you. And even if I did, it's too late. I've moved on."
Alex's eyes narrowed. "With who?" he spat.
Ella smiled, a sense of satisfaction washing over her. "Someone who actually cares about me. Someone who wouldn't hurt me like you did."
Alex's face turned red with anger, but Ella stood her ground. She knew she had made the right decision in leaving him.
As the confrontation escalated, Max appeared at the door, a look of concern on his face.
"Hey, is everything okay?" Max asked, his eyes scanning the scene.
Ella nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. "Yeah, everything's fine. Alex was just leaving."
Alex's eyes flashed with anger, but he knew he was beaten. "This isn't over, Ella," he spat, before turning and storming out of the apartment.
As the door slammed shut, Ella felt a sense of relief wash over her. She was glad to be rid of Alex, and she knew that she had made the right decision in leaving him.
Max turned to her, his eyes filled with concern. "Are you okay?" he asked, pulling her into a warm hug.
Ella nodded, feeling a sense of safety and security in Max's arms. "Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks for showing up."
Max smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Anytime, Ella. I'll always be here for you."
As they hugged, Ella knew that she had found her soulmate in Max. She had found a love that was kind, compassionate, and true.
But as they pulled back, Ella's eyes locked on something that made her heart skip a beat. On the coffee table, in plain sight, was a newspaper clipping with a shocking headline:
"Local Writer's Family Embroiled in Scandal"
Ella's eyes widened as she read the article. It was about Max's family, and their involvement in a shady business deal.
Ella felt a wave of uncertainty wash over her. Did she really know Max at all?
