Even on the prairie, Sarah Nordhuff put on a feast worthy of any New England dinner. She prepared the meats: pheasant, venison, and goose. The neighbors could have been in New York for Thanksgiving. Although goose was more of a Christmas tradition, they didn’t know if there would be any geese around the prairie in December. Frank and Gregory contributed their vegetables, and Mrs. McAvoy brought her dairy products. Although the holiday had only been official for three years, the neighbors enjoyed the tradition they had all grown up observing.
After Thanksgiving, December continued to be a cold and rainy month. Frank and Gregory had brought a few Christmas decorations with them and supplemented them with pine cones, twigs, and anything else they were able to find that looked fun to include
