Chapter 10 The smell of smoke caught Gregory’s attention first. From where he stood, the landscape looked like a stew of color, texture, and chaos. High above were the purplish-blue clouds of the front. Below the clouds, dark smoke churned up from the prairie fire. The prairie that should have glowed gold and green in the early August sunlight glowed fiery-red as the flames engulfed it. Then, Gregory heard the cries. In the far distance, the Osage dashed for the shallow water of river. Gregory hoped it would provide enough of a barrier to stop the raging fire.
