Sophia I told myself I would go home. I even made it as far as the elevator, purse in hand, ready to find Mia and get a ride back to the apartment, before I turned around and walked straight to the hospital's main entrance instead. I don't fully know what made me do it. Some instinct I didn't examine too closely, some pull that had nothing to do with logic and everything to do with the fact that I couldn't stand the thought of going home and lying awake wondering whether Mark's patient made it through the night. The waiting area outside the cardiac surgical wing was nearly empty at this hour, just a tired-looking family clustered in the corner and a nurse making rounds with a clipboard.
