Chapter Eight: The Traitor

562 Words
“Inside the territory,” Damon breathed, already moving toward the door. “That horn is coming from the East Wing. That’s that’s the healer’s quarters.” Luna’s stomach dropped through the floor. “That’s where I’ve been staying.” Magnus was already shifting, control fraying at the edges, alpha fury bleeding into his voice as he barked orders to the room. “Lock down every exit. Nobody in or out without my authorization. Damon, you’re with me. Kane” “I’m coming,” Kane said, voice hard, already moving. “No.” Luna stood so fast her chair clattered backward. “If someone’s inside the territory, it means they had help. Someone let them past the border wards. I need to know who.” “Luna” Magnus started. “I’m the target,” she snapped, adrenaline burning through the fear. “I’m not hiding in a war room while people fight a war for me. Not again.” Nobody argued with her there wasn’t time. The group moved fast through the corridors, Elena limping along behind despite Luna’s protests, and the closer they got to the East Wing, the more Luna’s dread sharpened into something horribly specific. They found the healer’s quarters ransacked furniture overturned, a window shattered outward, and standing in the middle of the wreckage, breathing hard, blood on her hands that wasn’t her own, was Wren. The omega information broker. The pack gossip. The wolf everyone underestimated because she was small and quiet and always seemed to be listening at the edges of rooms. “Wren?” Luna’s voice cracked. “What happened? Are you hurt?” But Wren wasn’t looking at her with relief. She was looking at her with something closer to grief and guilt. “I didn’t know it would go this far,” Wren whispered, backing toward the broken window. “Victor said he just wanted information. He said nobody would get hurt. I didn’t know about the raid, I swear, Luna, I didn’t know” The room went ice cold. “You’re the leak,” Magnus said, voice deadly quiet, stepping forward with a fury that made the walls seem to shrink. “You’ve been feeding Victor Cole information about this pack.” “I needed the money,” Wren said, tears streaking her face. “My brother’s pack was starving, Magnus, you know the Cole territory controls the eastern trade routes, I didn’t have a choice” “There’s always a choice,” Kane said, low and furious. “I came back,” Wren said desperately, eyes locked on Luna. “I came back to warn you, not to help them. The second team they’re not at the eastern ridge anymore. Victor moved them. They’re already inside the walls. They’ve been inside for an hour.” Luna felt the pack bond ripple with sudden, sharp alarm Magnus’s fury spiking through the connection like lightning, every wolf in the vicinity going tense at once. “Where,” Magnus said, voice a blade, “are they now?” Wren’s eyes filled with fresh horror as she looked past all of them, toward the door. “They’re not coming for the healer’s quarters,” she whispered. “That was a distraction. They’re going for the nursery. Victor wants leverage and he knows exactly which children in this pack matter most to you, Magnus.”
