THE VILLAGE WAS DESERTED, the taverns were closed. The town slept. Nicole walked slowly through the streets reaching out with her senses for any hint of Jack’s passing. His ship would have docked here. He would have passed along the main street through town. Yet she found no sign of him. “Where are you Jack?” She whispered to the night. She’d searched every tavern, talked to the tavern wenches and drunken patrons even managed to snatch a knife and a few coins from a drunken merchant. Nevertheless, in a harbor town the citizens were used to strangers and Jack, however handsome Nicole thought him to be, did not stand out among these people as a human did in an Elven village.
