Raine’s POV
“Raine Stone, come down to the principal’s office at this very instant,” an announcement was made from the PA system around the school.
I was sitting alone in the corner of the classroom as usual when I heard the announcement. Everyone murmured and made fun of me as they called my name. I was the black sheep of my family, the school and even the entire pack.
It’s been over a year since I turned sixteen and I didn’t gain my wolf. Whenever we turn sixteen, it is a normal thing to gain your wolf but now I’m seventeen and mine refuse to show.
I automatically became an outcast for this reason, everyone makes mockery of me, call me names, and bully me among several other things. It isn’t much of a big deal to me now because I’m used to it already.
There were several theories as to why I couldn’t shift. Several people called me cursed because my mother died in labour while giving birth to me. I always wondered if that was my fault. My siblings hate me for this same reason, they keep reminding me all the time that I killed our mother.
Suddenly, Zane tapped me gently on my back and said, “up… up Raine, let’s get to the principal’s office together.”
Zane was the only friend I had. She always stood by me no matter the circumstances and wouldn’t hesitate to stand up to anyone who talks bad about me. I cherish her so much and would literally do anything for her.
“Thanks for helping me Zane. I felt so uncomfortable and couldn’t leave my desk because all eyes were on me,”
“You know I’m always here for you anytime,” Zane said as she held my hands tightly.
At that moment, the murmuring and abuses were the least of my concerns. My mind was clouded with thoughts of why the principal will want me in his office. A vein popped out of my neck as we drew closer to the entrance.
I knew very well that I had no guardian to defend me so I always try as much as possible to stay out of trouble. But whenever anyone is being called to the principal’s office, it means the person is in trouble in most cases. Sadness clouded my features as I walked towards the door. I was pessimistic and willing to accept any punishment whatsoever since pain wasn’t new to me.
I told Zane to go back even though she insisted on entering his office with me, I wouldn’t want her to be caught up in my life drama. I knocked gently and didn’t get a response.
I knocked the second time, this time harder, but still didn’t get a response. Then I pushed the door open to let myself in.
“What!? So disrespectful!” The Alpha, Philip growled loudly as his fingers curled into a fist.
I was taken aback. I didn’t expect to see the alpha in the Principal’s office. I lowered my head and stood silently as I chewed on my bottom lips.
I looked around and saw Jake, the alpha to be and Sonia, my sister sitting comfortably on his laps. His arms wrapped around her waist as he gave me a dirty look.
“Is that how you do here? Students just barge into the principal’s office without permission? What nonsense!” Philip asked the principal as his breathing rate increased.
I was already used to his rants, I stay with the family a-times and so I was used to them treating me like trash. My father was his beta and a very strong one for that matter. He died saving the alpha from the attack of a deadly lone wolf few years back so I was left in his care.
A lone wolf is a pack-less wolf. It’s so unusual for werewolves to be all alone because it’s in our nature to be in packs. So if you find one, it means he was most likely banished from a pack for being deadly or causing too much harm.
I stood there helplessly, lowering my gaze and anticipating any punishment that comes after. Punishment wasn’t new to me, I’m their punching bag initially so it wasn’t a big deal.
“So are you just going to stand there without saying anything?” Jake asked.
I raised my head, sized him up and replied, “I’m sorry,” not meaning a single word I said.
“She’s so rude,” Sonia added.
I looked her straight in the eyes and gave her a dirty look.
I and Jake used to be close when we were much younger, I admired him so much. But things changed when I turned 16 and couldn’t gain my wolf. All of a sudden, he became rude and heartless. He kept reminding me of how weak I was and compared me to a human since I couldn’t wolf up. It was also a mystery to me that I couldn’t wolf up since my parents were both powerful werewolves.
Things became complicated when he found out I was his mate. He started maltreating me, he treated me like a slave; same way everyone in that house did. He always reminded me we could never be together and he would never take a weak werewolf as his Luna. I wasn’t even sure I was a werewolf since I couldn’t transform.
“I called you here because Jake has found his mate and I’m sure you can tell who it is,” Philip said.
“And who will that be if I may ask? Sonia? I asked without budging, not minding the punishment that comes after.
“Yes of course, Sonia. Do you have a problem with that?” Philip asked in a harsh tone.
“Why would she have a problem with that? Even if she does, she has to keep her mouth shut and be silenced forever till death do us part,” Jake said, as he laughed out loud.
Laughter filled the entire room as they laughed at the joke and made fun of me.
My face reddened and I asked, “so why am I here?” not minding what will happen to me afterwards.
“Who are you talking to in such manner? What disrespect? I know how to deal with you when we get home.” The Alpha said.
“By the way, Jake’s coronation is in a few months since he has finally found his Luna. They will be joined together on that same day as well. It is a special occasion so I will need you to be in charge of it and captain the whole occasion.” The Alpha added.
He makes it sound like a sweet job description but in reality, he’s going to make me work my ass out. All the labour work is going to fall on my head. I wasn’t new to that though so it didn’t surprise me that much.
“I wonder what you’re still doing in this school, this is a school for werewolves and since you refused to shift for more than a year now, you’re not any different from humans,” Sonia said.
“That’s a very good point,” Jake added as his arm went around her waist as he squeezed it gently.
“So true, I see no reason why you’re still here.” The Alpha said.
The Principal interrupted and said, “she has just few months to go so it wouldn’t hurt for her to stay till the end.”
“Hmmm, I’ll think about it,” the alpha said as a thick shuddering breath came out of his nostrils.
I stared gadders at Sonia at the moment, I wish I could strangle her where she was. Why did my blood sister for that matter hates me so much? I couldn’t wrap my head around that thought.
“Why does the moon goddess have to be so cruel to me? My mother died why giving birth to me, I can’t shift my form also. It feels like the whole world is against me,” my thoughts went wild as I stood at the corner.
“The only reason you’re still a member of this pack is because I owe it to your father. He was a powerful and loyal beta, unlike you,” the alpha said.
The news I heard so far already broke me so I was determined to speak freely without minding the consequences. “Oh really? I don’t think you’re doing a very good job with that then because I feel more like an outcast in this pack,” I responded
“What!? You dare talk to your alpha in that manner? What disrespect?” Jake said, as his face hardened.
He ran swiftly towards me and gripped my neck tight. He then raised me up and slammed my back against the wall. I was struggling and trying to catch my breath but he didn’t let go.
It was at that moment I realised the gravity of what I said but I didn’t regret saying it. I knew the highest they could do was beat me and I was no stranger to that, I was so used to pain already.
Suddenly, Philip’s eyes glittered as he growled. Now, that freaked me out. Most times when a werewolf eyes glitters, it means he’s mind-linking someone else.
I heard footsteps echo loudly from the passage. Suddenly, the door bursted wide open and everyone’s attention was drawn to the door to see who made that dramatic entrance.
