Chapter 4 Skipping Classes

687 Words
Ji Siya's face was drained of all color. Glancing at the peculiar looks from the people around, she felt a flutter of panic in her heart. Just then, the school bell rang. In a fit of exasperation, Ji Siya blurted out, "I've no idea what you're talking about. You're simply ungrateful!" With that, she swiftly turned around and took her seat. The crowd dispersed, their gazes at Ji Siya and Rong Yan subtly altered. Rong Yan disregarded the glances of the others and walked to the solitary seat in the last row and sat down. The teacher entered and swept her eyes over the students, pausing briefly on Ji Siya, Rong Yan, and the young man from before. Once assured that everyone was unharmed, she uttered coldly, "This school is a place for learning, not for brawling. Just because you come from prominent families doesn't give you the right to bully your fellow classmates at will!" "None of you should act like hooligans, relying solely on brute force!" Rong Yan lifted her eyes, meeting the teacher's gaze, a faint curve tugging at the corner of her mouth, her eyes icy and devoid of warmth. Ji Siya was the top student in the school, and that young man was the second-best, making them the teacher's darlings. In contrast, Rong Yan, a girl fresh from the remotest of backwaters, who had never received proper formal education, was dead last in the entire school, with a total score not even exceeding three digits! Yet she had been assigned to the best class in the school. In the teacher's eyes, undoubtedly, she was a stain on her teaching career. In her previous life, Rong Yan never provoked others, but there were always those who took issue with her and came looking for trouble. She usually tried to avoid them if possible; if not, she'd stand her ground. Clearly, she was the victim, yet due to her poor grades, everyone was quick to assume that she was the bully. This teacher was no different, always making veiled jibes, too timid to openly reproach her out of fear of the Rong family. Later, she learned that the teacher disliked her because her return to the Rong family had blocked someone's path. It was laughable. Back then, she had actually hoped that if she improved her grades, the teacher might be kinder to her. Looking back now, it was nothing but ironic. Meeting Rong Yan's cold and mocking eyes, the teacher was startled, swallowing the rest of her words. Being stared at by Rong Yan as if she were a corpse made her heart palpitate. She was compelled to avert her gaze, cleared her throat softly, and said, "Take out your Chinese textbooks and turn to page fifty-seven..." Rong Yan calmly withdrew her gaze and opened the textbook. She sat quietly, gazing at the book before her. All of this, so familiar yet so strange, still felt somewhat surreal to her. Nevertheless, she accepted the reality with equanimity. Upon the end of the first class, Rong Yan rose from her seat and left the classroom, making her way directly to the rear playground. By then, the school bell had rung again, and everyone was filing back into the classroom. Rong Yan glanced at the surveillance cameras and then simply ignored them. With a running start, she nimbly scaled the wall and flipped over it with grace and ease. The teacher on duty in the surveillance room: "..." Did I just hallucinate? At that moment, the school administrators not far from the playground were accompanying someone on a tour. Their line of sight happened to fall on that very spot. The dean of students awkwardly wiped the sweat from his forehead. Just moments ago, he had been boasting about how formidable the school's surveillance and order were, vowing that there would never be an instance of students skipping classes. He claimed that even if someone tried to skip, they'd be caught and nipped in the bud! However, scarcely a minute after his words faded, a student had dashed right out of sight over the wall!
