COLE  Black smoke clawed up the sky like a dying man reaching for heaven. We rode toward it anyway, because there was nowhere else to go. The convoy ambush had already happened. Ronn’s message through the contact had been short and brutal; three vans hit, most of the women taken back, two Revenants dead. The burning ahead was probably the last bridge we had out of this parish. My hands ached on the grips. Raine’s arms were locked tight around my waist, her body pressed against my back like she could hold the whole world together through sheer will. We crested a rise and saw it. The old wooden bridge over the bayou was fully engulfed, the flames licking high and greedy. Two abandoned vans sat nearby, doors open, bullet holes riddling the sides. Bodies on the ground. My stomach turned.
