"Spread your legs for me, bunny." Myra shot up in bed, her face flushed and slick with sweat. Her breath quickened, she blinked multiple times, trying to calm her breathing. That dream again. Placing a hand on her warm cheek, she sighed deeply and looked at the clock. 9:47 a.m. Her eyes widened in alarm. "Oh no... I'm late!" Myra sprang out of bed, gasping at the sudden movement. She instinctively cradled her swollen belly, murmuring, “Easy… easy…” At almost eight months pregnant, her body always reminded her she wasn't alone anymore. With cautious movement, she stood up and hurried toward the bathroom. However, as the water hit her shoulders, her thoughts drifted back to that same recurring dream, her wedding night. She felt heat rise in her cheeks as memories flooded back. Her husband had seemed… different that night. Wild. Almost unrecognizable. Even his voice had been deeper, rougher, but she dismissed it; it was a celebration, after all, and Robert had indulged in too much champagne. Everyone acted strangely after so many drinks, right? Gently tapping her cheeks as if to shake off the memory, she muttered, “Stop blushing like an idiot.” Unfortunately or perhaps fortunately, she had gotten pregnant right after that night. Since then, Robert had never touched her again, saying he didn’t want to inconvenience her or the baby. She rinsed her body quickly, trying to ignore the warmth that pooled down there at the thought of that night. “Focus,” she whispered. Turning off the shower, she wrapped a towel around herself and hurriedly got dressed. Today was important. Her prenatal appointment at the hospital had already been rescheduled once; if she missed it again, Dr. Rina, her family doctor would surely scold her. Minutes later, she grabbed her bag and rushed out the door. The hospital waiting room had a faint scent of antiseptic and coffee. Sitting nervously on the examination bed, she swung her legs slightly, resting her fingers protectively over her belly. “Alright, Mrs. Wood,” Dr. Rina said gently as she prepared the ultrasound for Myra's stomach. “Let’s check on your baby today.” Myra scrutinized the monitor, anxious but excited. She loved these moments, seeing the tiny heartbeat and knowing everything was alright. Suddenly, the doctor paused, and Myra sensed it immediately. “Doctor…?” she asked, unsettled. Dr. Rina leaned closer to the screen, adjusting the wand. “Hmm…” Myra's heart raced. “Is something wrong?” Then the doctor smiled, “Well… this is interesting.” Myra squinted at the monitor, trying to comprehend. Two small shapes shifted slightly. Two. Her mind struggled to grasp the meaning. “Wow… do you see this?” Dr. Rina pointed again. “There they are.” Myra frowned. “They…?” “Yes, they are two,” the doctor confirmed warmly. Confusion filled Myra's eyes. “What?” “You’re expecting twins,” Dr. Rina explained. “One was hidden behind the other during previous scans, that's why we never noticed earlier.” Myra's mouth dropped. “Twins…?” she whispered, her eyes brimming with tears. Dr. Rina nodded. “Yes.” A soft, disbelieving laugh rang out.“Oh my God…” She touched her belly, trembling. “Hello, babies,” she whispered. Just then, one of them kicked, causing her to gasp softly. “Did you feel that?” the doctor chuckled. “They seem quite active today.” Wiping her tears with the back of her hand, she couldn't suppress her smile. “Thank you, Doctor…” After finishing the scan, Dr. Rina nodded toward the nurse. “Alright, Miss Metzler, that will be all for now.” Myra corrected her gently, “Mrs. Wood.” “Oh, yes, sorry,” the doctor replied with a smile. “Since you're almost eight months, be extra careful. Avoid stress and rest as much as possible.” Myra nodded eagerly, promising, “I will.” “The nurse will tidy you up and explain a few more things,” Dr. Rina added before removing her gloves. “I have other patients waiting.” “Thank you, Doctor,” Nyra expressed gratefully. A few minutes later, as she left the hospital room, her hands cradled her belly. “Twins…” she murmured again, her heart filled to the brink, threatening to burst. “I should call Rob,” she said, reaching for her phone. But then she hesitated, opting to tell him in person instead. A shy smile spread on her face, imagining his reaction to the news. Gently rubbing her belly, she whispered, “Hi babies.” Another kick responded right away, and she laughed softly. “Did you hear that? Daddy is going to pass out when he hears this.” On her drive home, Myra couldn’t stop smiling. She tried calling Rob. The phone rang, no answer. She tried again. Still nothing. “I wonder what he’s occupied with,” she mused. Maybe work; he’d been spending a lot of time at the office lately. Eventually, she pulled into the driveway, but something caught her eye: a red car parked near the entrance. Myra frowned slightly. “Were there guests?” Tilting her head, she thought, “Maybe that’s why he didn’t answer.” But then she wondered why no one told her. Stepping out of the car, she walked slowly into the house. “Butler Jen?” she called, but there was no reply. The silence was unsettling. She ascended the stairs cautiously, gripping the railing. Since getting pregnant, she and Rob had been sleeping in separate rooms; he insisted he didn’t want to disturb her rest. It was quite sweet initially but…, Heading down the hallway toward her room, a soft giggle echoed in the corridor, freezing Myra in place. Her heart raced as she turned her head; the sounds originated from Rob’s room. Is he home? She crept closer, then heard a breathy voice saying, “Oh… Rob…” Nyra’s hand stiffened around the doorknob as her heart thundered loudly in her ears. Someone was inside. On their bed. Her mind raced. Who could it be? A servant? Or… Jennifer. Rob’s adopted sister had visited the previous day but hadn't she left? Myra's stomach churned, her grip tightening on the handle. With a shudder, Myra pushed the door open, her heart beating with dread. The room fell silent, she looked up, spotting Jennifer on top of someone. As the door opened, Jennifer turned her head slowly toward Myra, shock flashing across her face for a moment before morphing into a twisted smile. “Jennifer,” Myra stammered, her voice shaky. “How could you bring someone into…” Her words faltered as her gaze dropped, shattering inside her. It was… it was her husband. Rob. “Rob…?” her voice broke as disbelief washed over her; her husband stared back, frozen, and the truth hit her all at once, her husband was in bed with his own sister.
