Chapter Three: Closer Than Before

371 Words
A week passed in quiet avoidance. Ryan buried himself in university work, pretending not to notice Emily slipping silently through the halls. But every time he heard her voice from another room, his heart betrayed him — beating faster for someone he had no right to love. One night, Ryan found himself restless. Unable to sleep, he walked downstairs, drawn by the soft glow of the kitchen light. Emily stood by the counter, wearing a simple sweater and jeans, her hair loosely tied. She looked so normal — yet to Ryan, painfully beautiful. “You can’t sleep either?” she asked softly, startled by his sudden presence. Ryan shook his head, stepping closer. “No. Couldn’t stop thinking.” Emily lowered her gaze, her fingers nervously playing with a mug. “About… that night?” “Yes,” Ryan whispered honestly. “And about you.” Silence fell, heavy and fragile. Emily’s breath caught, and she turned her head, but Ryan saw her eyes glisten with unshed tears. “It’s wrong, Ryan,” she breathed. “You know that.” “I know,” he admitted, voice rough. “But it doesn’t stop how I feel.” Emily’s hands trembled. She placed the mug on the counter, afraid it might slip. “You’re making this harder,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Tell me to stop, and I will,” Ryan said, his heart pounding. “But only if you really mean it.” Emily looked up at him, her eyes full of conflict and longing. For a moment, she didn’t speak. Instead, she reached out, her fingers brushing lightly against his arm — a touch so gentle yet it sent fire racing through his veins. “I can’t,” she finally whispered, her voice breaking. Their eyes locked, breathing quick, hearts loud enough to hear. But before anything more could happen, footsteps echoed in the hall. They stepped apart instantly, the moment shattering like glass. “Go,” Emily mouthed, her chest rising and falling rapidly. Ryan nodded, his heart aching as he slipped away into the darkness — but inside, something had changed. Emily hadn’t told him to stop. And that small truth burned brighter than any guilt.
