Chapter 6

ASHINA A few days have passed and I haven’t seen Tyr. Tre was busy with work too, so I only saw him in the evening. If I am lucky, I get to see his side profile before he leaves the bedroom. So far, he is following the rules I’ve set, and I’m happy. It sounds childish for some, but not to me. I am just trying to protect myself from more heartbreak after the last one. This afternoon, I was out for a walk within the pack’s territory when Angelo, Tre’s Gamma came to see me. “Sorry to disturb you, but the Alpha wants to let you know that he is taking you out to dinner, and you have to be ready for six in the evening.” “Do you know which restaurant?” “He didn’t tell me, but it would be one of the fancy ones.” “Okay. Thank you, Angelo.” He nodded and walked away. When I glanced at my watch, I still had three hours left to get ready. I cut my afternoon walk short and headed back to the house after twenty minutes. I took a quick shower then dried my hair. Putting make up on and making sure I smell nice is easy, but I had a hard time picking out a dress. In the end, I chose an off-shoulder emerald coloured dress with a twist in front. I let my hair down and put a little clip on the side. Five minutes before six, I went to the living room and waited for the driver. “You looked stunning.” I caught his scent before he even spoke. Tre looked dashing with his three-piece suit. “So do you.” I gave him a small smile when he offered his hand before I stood up. He never let my hand go. We kept walking, and the silence was killing me. “Done with work?” He nodded. “Sorry I haven’t been around lately.” “Tough clients?” “Yes. Too many demands, so little time. Did you miss me?” He asked once we were inside the car. Before I could even answer, he leaned over and pressed his lips on mine. “Finn missed you.” I don’t know if I should feel sad about that or what. His wolf missed me. Does that mean Tre didn’t? Ugh. What did I get myself into? Is it too late to back out now? Then I thought about our agreement and the fact that I already gave him my word, so it’s a go. While he drove, I pretended to listen to music and stare outside the window. I didn’t notice the car had been parked until he spoke and said, “You haven’t answered my question.” His face was so close to mine that I could almost taste his lips. I smiled said, "Foxy missed him too." Tre caressed my cheek and I closed my eyes when I felt his touch. Is he going to kiss me? "Stay here. I'll open the door for you." The kiss didn't happen. *** The restaurant was packed and Angelo was right when he said it was fancy. It had a luxurious and elegant atmosphere and refined decor. The plush furnishings, sparkling chandeliers, and ornate table settings. I already knew that the menu would feature gourmet dishes prepared with the finest ingredients and a creative presentation. We were given a menu once we were seated and Tre let me order what I wanted. He settled for steak while I ordered chicken and other things, not caring about the carbs. I saw him smile when the server left with our list. "What? Why are you smiling?" "You ordered more than salad." I furrowed my brows. "Am I supposed to just eat leaves tonight?" He grinned at me. "No. I'm just surprised that you have a big appetite." The truth is, I'm hungry because I barely ate lunch and only had a coffee in the morning. I declined the snack Mildred prepared for me this afternoon because I wanted to have room for dinner. "Why? The girls you go out with only eat leaves and cheese for dinner?" Tre laughed a little. "I can't even remember the last time I dated someone, but yes— they like salad, cheese and wine. Maybe a little bit of meat but no mashed potatoes or rice. I'm just glad you're normal." "Of course, I am." I gave him a smirk. "Besides, I am really hungry. I could eat—" "Me?" he teased. I blushed upon hearing what he said. "Stop it. Someone might hear you." He laughed a little more and played with his wine glass. "I have a question." "Okay. What is it?" "How come you didn't know my brother was your mate?" When I had my wolf at eighteen, I was so excited about meeting my mate. I was hoping it would be Tyr, but for some reason I could not sense him or anyone for that matter. I tried. It was easier with Tre because he smelled like pineapple and cinnamon, but with Tyr— it was like water until my graduation party. His scent changed to pine and lemon. I remember telling him we needed to talk, and he just nodded like he wasn't interested. It was weird. Tyr acted strangely that night, like he was cursed. And because there were a lot of people, we kept being interrupted, so when I heard he was having a party at their place, I figured it would be much more appropriate to talk there. He would give me time and claim me. Well, that never happened. "He was there on your eighteenth birthday," he added. Tre was right. Both of them were there. "Did he tell you I was his mate?" "You already asked me that question before." "You didn't answer me properly." Tre remained quiet. "I couldn't sense him. It felt like there was this strange barrier. Like a magical spell. Remember when you told me I was still able to walk after the rejection?" He nodded. "It was painful but tolerable. I hate to say it, but maybe the Moon Goddess had a change of heart at the last minute?" "She's never wrong, Ash." I shook my head. "Then I don't understand why your brother would be so callous and reckless. He knew I was there. Why would he—" Tre heaved a sigh. "Do you know anything about it? He was strange that night. It was almost like it was planned." "Does it matter at this point if it's planned or not?" "But—" "You have me now." He looked into my eyes as he reached for my hand. "And we have an agreement." Way to kill the mood, Tre.
