EPISODE 5: THE ROOM THAT DOESN’T EXIST

935 Words
The wind howled louder than usual that night, rattling the high windows of the east tower. Most students were asleep, their dreams undisturbed by the secrets buried beneath stone and shadow. But Eliana Rivers was wide awake, heart pounding, pendant glowing softly beneath her collar. Nia stood beside her, breath fogging the cold air. “This is it,” she whispered, pointing to a section of the wall that looked… wrong. Too smooth. Too perfect. No cracks, no seams. Just solid stone. But Eliana’s pendant pulsed when she stepped closer, its warmth guiding her like a compass. “I’m sure there’s something behind it,” Eliana murmured. She pressed her palm to the wall. A faint vibration hummed beneath her skin. “Help me look for a trigger.” They searched silently, fingers brushing every crevice and brick. Then Nia gasped, her hand pausing over a carved emblem — a tiny sun hidden within the stone. She pressed it. With a low groan, the wall trembled. A seam appeared, then another, and slowly the stone split open, revealing a narrow passage that spiraled downward. Eliana swallowed hard. “This isn’t on any of the maps we’ve seen.” “Because it’s not supposed to exist,” Nia replied. “Let’s go.” Torchlight flickered as they descended, the passage growing colder with each step. At the bottom, a heavy wooden door stood untouched by time. Carved into it was a name: AERYN RIVERS Eliana’s breath caught in her throat. “Rivers,” she whispered. “That’s… my name.” Nia stared. “Eliana, isn’t that—?” “My mother. That was her name. But she… she died. That’s what Gran always told me.” With trembling fingers, Eliana pushed the door open. The room beyond was silent. Frozen in time. Dust motes floated in the air, but everything else remained pristine — a bed with velvet blankets, books scattered across a desk, a crystal orb glowing faintly on a shelf. A robe hung on the wall, stitched with silver thread and symbols Eliana recognized from her pendant. “It’s like she left yesterday,” Nia whispered. Eliana moved slowly, afraid to breathe too hard, as though the room might vanish if she did. Her fingers brushed a diary on the desk. It was sealed with a red ribbon. She untied it and opened to the first page. > To my daughter, if you ever find this — then the Academy has failed to erase me. Eliana’s heart stopped. > My name is Aeryn Rivers. I was once a student here — and later, something much more. What they told you about me is a lie. I didn’t die. I disappeared. Because I learned the truth about the Academy’s magic. And they couldn’t allow me to leave with it. The rest of the page was smudged with ink, as if hastily written. Eliana flipped through, scanning fragments of her mother’s thoughts. The Headmistress knows. She’s watching everyone. The pendant will protect you. It’s tied to the Source. Trust no one who wears the serpent ring. Nia leaned over her shoulder. “Eliana… this changes everything.” “I need to know more,” Eliana said, closing the diary. Her eyes scanned the room again. On a shelf above the bed sat a cracked photograph. It showed a younger Aeryn, smiling, arms around two other students. One of them looked vaguely familiar… until Eliana recognized her. “That's Headmistress Calvina,” she whispered, her voice sharp. “But she hasn’t aged a day.” The room seemed to grow colder. “She’s using magic to stay young,” Eliana murmured. “That’s why she’s been here for decades. What if she’s not just hiding the truth — what if she’s the one controlling everything?” Suddenly, a faint creak echoed from the passage above. Footsteps. “Someone’s coming,” Nia whispered. Eliana shoved the diary into her cloak. “We have to hide.” They ducked behind a tapestry just as the door creaked open. A soft light spilled in — candlelight. Through the narrow crack, they saw a figure enter. Tall. Cloaked. And then Eliana saw the ring — silver, shaped like a serpent swallowing its tail. The figure looked around the room slowly, then muttered something under their breath. The crystal orb on the shelf dimmed. Whatever magic lingered in the room was being sealed again. The figure left. They waited in silence, breath shallow, until the footsteps faded entirely. When they were sure it was safe, they stepped out. Nia grabbed Eliana’s arm. “That was one of the instructors, wasn’t it?” Eliana nodded. “They’re keeping this room hidden. That means it’s dangerous — or powerful. Or both.” Back in her own hour's later, Eliana lay awake, the diary hidden beneath her pillow, her mind racing. Her mother had once walked these halls. Discovered the truth. And vanished. Now Eliana had found her room — untouched, protected, sealed away. Why? To keep others from knowing her fate? Or from following in her footsteps? Eliana clutched the pendant. Its glow had faded, but she knew it wasn’t just a necklace. It was a key. Maybe even a weapon. “I won’t let them erase you,” she whispered into the night. “I’ll find the truth. Just like you tried to do.” Outside, a shadow moved past her window. Watching. Waiting. The game had changed. And the Academy had just made a mistake: They let a Rivers into the room that doesn’t exist. --- To be continued 🆔️ Zeeworld
