EPISODE 2: THE MARK AND THE MAZE

555 Words
Eliana Rivers barely had time to blink before the strange woman in midnight robes turned and glided away, her dark cloak trailing behind like smoke. The five other teenagers hesitated. One of them—a boy with sharp eyes and ink-black hair—stepped forward to follow her. The others fell in line. Eliana lingered. Everything felt unreal. The night, the courtyard, the magic. She still clutched the parchment in her hand. Suddenly, the envelope burned gently against her palm. She looked down—and gasped. A glowing mark, the same swirling symbol from the seal, was now etched faintly onto the inside of her wrist. It shimmered softly like moonlight, pulsing with warmth. “What...?” she breathed. “Don’t panic,” said a quiet voice beside her. Eliana turned to see a girl—freckled, flame-haired, maybe sixteen—nodding calmly. “It’s the Calling Mark,” the girl explained. “Means the Academy chose you. We all have it. Mine appeared the moment I stepped through the gate.” “Gate?” Eliana echoed, still dazed. “But I was in my house just seconds ago. And now...” “I know,” the girl said gently. “It’s like a dream. But it’s real. I’m Nia.” “Eliana.” They shook hands—awkwardly—and hurried to catch up with the group. --- The new students were led into a towering hall carved out of obsidian stone. Dozens of floating candles lit the air above them. At the far end stood a long table where older students whispered among themselves, watching the newcomers with curious eyes. Headmistress Calvina turned to them. “Tonight, you are Seen. Tomorrow, you begin. But first—your trial.” A hush fell over the hall. “Each of you will enter the Maze of Echoes,” she continued. “Alone. Find your token. Only then may you be housed and named.” “Wait, what maze?” one boy asked nervously. But the headmistress was already gone. The floor beneath them shifted. Stones rumbled. And then—without warning—Eliana fell. --- She landed with a soft thud on damp moss. Darkness surrounded her. “Eliana Rivers,” a whisper echoed. “Do you remember who you are?” A flicker of light appeared ahead—dancing, floating like a will-o’-the-wisp. She followed it cautiously. The corridor twisted. Stone walls pulsed with whispers. Shadows moved just out of reach. Symbols etched into the walls began to glow faintly as she passed. Then she saw it—a mirror. Old, cracked. But inside, it didn’t reflect her image. It reflected a younger version of her... holding a book. The book is from her grandmother’s library. “Eliana,” the reflection said. “It’s not just you who’s in danger. The Academy hides more than it teaches.” Eliana stepped back, shaken. Suddenly, a stone door slid open beside her. On a pedestal lay a glowing pendant—the same symbol carved into it. She reached out— And the whispers stopped. The pendant pulsed in her hand. Then she heard the headmistress’s voice again, distant but clear: “You have taken your first step. But beware. The maze remembers who enters... and not all who enter return.” --- To be continued... 🆔️Zeeworld
