EPISODE 7: BETRAYAL IN THE SHADOWS

967 Words
The skies above the Academy darkened unnaturally, as if a storm brooded just beyond sight. Shadows lengthened in the corners of the halls, stretching far longer than they should. Eliana felt it in her bones — something was wrong. She sat alone in the ancient library, the pendant on her chest glowing a restless orange, flickering like a dying flame. Ever since the trials ended, she’d felt a shift in the Academy’s energy. Whispers drifted through the walls at night. Doors opened by themselves. Even Nia had grown quieter, distracted. That evening, while sifting through forgotten scrolls in the restricted section, Eliana’s fingers brushed against something wedged behind a loose stone — a letter sealed with the Rivers family crest. Her hands trembled as she unfolded it. The parchment was worn but readable. My dearest Eliana, If you’re reading this, then the seals have begun to weaken. There is a chamber deep beneath the Academy, older than the stone it’s built on — sealed long ago after it nearly destroyed our world. Calvina knows this. She seeks its power, but she does not understand its cost. If it opens, the Academy will fall. Trust no one. Not even those closest to you. — Aeryn Rivers Eliana clutched the letter to her chest, her heart pounding. Her mother… alive long enough to write this. Why hadn’t she been told? And what was this forbidden chamber? The pendant flared suddenly, searing hot against her skin. Images burst into her mind — a war-torn Academy, students fighting each other, shadows swallowing classrooms, and at the heart of it all… a door. A massive, obsidian door, inscribed with ancient runes — and Calvina standing before it. “Eliana!” Nia’s voice snapped her back. She looked up, startled, as Nia rushed into the library, her eyes wide with fear. “You need to come. Now.” --- They hurried through the dim halls toward the old bell tower, where the others were waiting. Jules, Davin, and Mira stood in a tense circle, the air thick with unease. Jules’ arms were crossed, his face unreadable. “So, you found the letter.” Eliana narrowed her eyes. “You knew?” “I’ve always known.” His voice was calm — too calm. “You think you're the only one with secrets?” “What are you talking about?” Davin demanded, stepping forward. Jules sighed and reached into his cloak, pulling out a key — obsidian, carved with the same runes Eliana had seen in her vision. “Headmistress Calvina has been guiding me. Preparing me. The chamber holds power beyond anything the rest of you can imagine. She wants to unlock it — and I’m the only one who can.” “You’re working with her?” Nia gasped. “She showed me the truth,” Jules snapped. “This place isn't about learning magic — it’s about hiding it. Containing what we are. But that door? It was never meant to be sealed. It was meant to be used.” “No,” Eliana said firmly. “You don’t know what you’re messing with. That chamber nearly destroyed everything once. My mother—” “Your mother was a coward,” Jules interrupted coldly. “She tried to keep it hidden, and look what happened to her.” A sudden gust of wind tore through the tower, slamming a window open. The pendant around Eliana’s neck pulsed rapidly, like a heartbeat in panic. Her hands curled into fists. “You don’t have to do this,” Mira said softly, stepping toward Jules. “We’re your friends.” “Friends?” Jules laughed bitterly. “You never saw me as anything more than backup. The quiet one. The one who follows. But I was chosen for this. Calvina believes in me.” “She’s using you!” Eliana shouted. “And when she gets what she wants, she’ll discard you like everyone else!” Jules’ jaw tightened. “Then you’re against me.” Before they could react, he threw the key to the floor. The stone beneath them shimmered, and a black sigil glowed beneath their feet. Eliana’s pendant blazed with light, reacting violently. “She’s opening it,” Nia breathed. “The seal… it’s breaking!” Eliana acted on instinct. She grabbed the key and pressed her burning pendant against it. A shockwave exploded outward, knocking everyone back. The glow faded. The sigil on the floor dimmed. When the dust cleared, Jules was gone. --- They reconvened in Eliana’s room that night, all shaken. “He’s taken the key,” Davin muttered. “He’s going to help Calvina unlock that door.” “We have to stop them,” Eliana said. “But we don’t even know where the chamber is.” Nia pulled out a torn map she’d found weeks ago in the Archives. “I think I do. There’s a section beneath the ruins — a part of the Academy that was buried after the Great Fire a century ago. If the door exists, it’s there.” Eliana nodded. Her pendant had gone still, as if waiting. “We go at dawn.” --- That night, Eliana couldn’t sleep. She stared at the letter again, memorizing her mother’s warning. Outside her window, the moon cast long shadows over the Academy. But one shadow moved. A cloaked figure stood on the far edge of the courtyard, unmoving, staring up at her window. Eliana’s breath caught. She blinked — and the figure vanished. Was it Jules… or someone else? The war in her visions hadn’t happened yet. But the echoes of it had begun. And if the chamber truly opened… it might not be the Academy that fell — it could be the entire world. --- To be continued… 🆔️Zeeworld
