Kat had been in the states for a couple of days. Her mom had helped her find a new job at a department store that had just fired their employer. Lucky for her, she came when she did. Friday was the last day they were taking applications.
“I start Monday.”
“Congratulations, sweetie!” Rebecca exclaimed. “I’m so proud of you. I should’ve known you would’ve gotten right to work.”
“Yes, you should have. I don’t want you to pay my whole way while I’m staying here.”
“Kat, I already told you that I do not mind.”
“Yes, Mother, but I do. Is lunch ready?”
“Yes, it is. Sit down.”
Kat sat down at the table next to Meralei who was already in her highchair. She gave her daughter a kiss.
“How long has my honey pot been up?”
“For hours,” Rebecca answered. “This one here is an early riser.”
Kat laughed. “Who are you tellin’? That’s what keeps me on my toes, Mother.”
The telephone rang, and Kat ran to answer it.
“Hello?”
No answer.
“Hello?”
Still no answer, so Kat hung up.
“Who was it?”
“I have no idea. They hung up. Were you expecting any calls?”
“No. I wouldn’t worry about it. You just sit here, eat, and feed that little one,” Rebecca said putting food on the table.
“Mmm. This looks so good.”
“Thank you, doll. So, how much is this job paying you?”
“I think it’s $11.50 an hour. That’s pretty good, right?”
“Yeah. How many hours will they have you working?”
“Umm … five to ten. Ten is when they close. With advancement, you can have longer hours … double shifts … and so on and so forth.”
“That’s good.”
“Yeah, but I can’t find my own apartment with that kind of pay,” Kat complained.
“All that will come in due time, honey. And there’s no rush. Again, you can stay as long as you want.”
“I know. Thank you, Mother. I just need to find a sense of independence right now.”
Rebecca sighed, “You remind me so much of myself at that age. It’s a little scary.”
“Oh mother. Don’t worry. I won’t make any trouble for you.”
