Heartbreaker

282 Words
Rebecca took her keys out of her bag and opened the door to her apartment.  Kat couldn’t wait to see the place that her mom left her to live at and the new house she’d call home.             “Home sweet home,” Rebecca recited as she stepped into her apartment.  “Is Meralei still asleep?”             “Yep.  She’s out cold,” Kat answered.  “Oh, this is so nice, Mother.  Very nice place.  I thought you had a house, though.”             “I did.  I really didn’t see the point in having a house if I was gonna be living by myself.”             “I hope we’re not gonna crowd you.”             “Oh no, doll.  It’s a two bedroom.  There’s a lot of space in here, believe me.  Your room is right in the back corner.  Already set up.  Why don’t you go get some sleep?  I know you’re tired.”             “Exhausted.  Goodnight, Mother.”             “Goodnight, sweetheart.” Rebecca was so glad to finally see her baby safe, at home, and happy.  But … since she wasn’t as tired as Kat, she figured she’d make a phone call.  Just as she reached the phone, it rang.             “Hello?”             “Hello.”             “Rebecca?”             “Hi, honey.”             “Hi.  Did you just get back?”             “That I did.  Brought Kat and Meralei home and they are sleeping.”             “That’s good to hear.  Well, if you’re not doing anything …”             “I’ll be right over.”
