Chapter 17: "Let's talk"

1235 Words
Jo's POV It was evident that whispers were circulating and eyes were filled with envy, as everyone seemed to be engrossed in conversations about me. None of you would want to be in my place, but whatever. I lowered my head onto my desk trying to do my job but I realised Maya's eyes were fixed on me, demanding an explanation. I was not ready for that yet. All I want to do right now is finish as soon as possible so I can bring an end to his existence. "Jo. What does all of this mean? Did you break up with Alex?" Maya asked the inevitable and I didn't know how to explain. She is my best friend, but even I cannot keep up with the changes in my life lately. It's been so hectic that I haven't had a chance to sit down and fill her in until now. "It's a very long story, Maya." "I don't want to pressure you, but I want to make sure you're okay. You love Alex. What could have happened over the weekend that made you break up with him and start dating Time?!" "I'll tell you everything, but not right now." Giving a firm nod of approval, she simply carried on with her tasks, shooting a piercing look at anyone who dared to linger. The performance had come to an end. That's why she is my best friend. She stands by my side even when I haven't shared anything with her. Even though she was the one who liked Time, she is waiting for my explanation. Because she knows there is one. The entire day transpired in a similar fashion where all eyes were fixed on Time as he was walking back and forth, waiting for me. I didn't expect him to actually wait. I thought he would get bored and give up. With my coat in hand, I planted a gentle kiss on Maya's cheek before heading towards him. As soon as I stepped outside I realized that today was exceptionally cold, and I couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt for keeping him waiting, because he was not wearing a coat. Yet I was still mad. "Can we talk now?" he asked and I noticed he was kinda shaking. Well, this is not exactly my fault. He could have just waited in his car or something. Or come back after my shift is over. "Let's go sit somwhere. I'm cold." I suggested, and he happily obliged, a warm smile gracing his face. We found the closest coffee shop, and the moment we sat down, I made up my mind to speak first, "What did you want to talk to me about?" Right away, he asked, "Did you break up with him?" "That doesn't concern you." "It does, because you are mine." Aaand the Time I know is back. "Actually, I have a better question...Have you ever considered seeing a therapist? Because I can recommend someone." He scoffed dismissively and made his way around the table, taking a seat right next to me. "Why? Are you concerned about me?" "Yes. I'm actually concerned about your mental health. You do realise this is not okay, right?" "I didn't get my answer. Did you break up with him? Or should I make him break up with you?" He took on a more somber tone this time. He was not joking, this was a threat! "And how do you plan on doing that?" "I really don't want to show that side of me to you and I really hope you won't make me. Now, be a good girl and answer me. Did you break up with him?" With an unwavering stare, he demanded an answer, compelling me to respond with a trembling voice. "I did." ................ Alex's POV As I stood in the middle of the road, it seemed like the cars had frozen in place, leaving me stranded with no way to proceed. However, upon getting closer, I realised there was a crowd of people that had gathered due to an unfortunate accident that had occurred. Knowing myself so well, I am fully aware that I wont be able to just walk away from the bustling crowd of people. Assisting someone in need is my personal antidote. Besides, these days I've been striving to divert my attention from personal matters. After parking the taxi, I hopped out and soon realized that it wasn't a major issue. But then, to my amazement, I also noticed that I actually recognized the person involved in it. However, before jumping in to help her, I wanted to understand what was going on first. Hence, I resolved to approach a stranger nearby, hoping to gain insight into the unfolding events. This individual had been present longer than I, making them a potential source of valuable information. As they recounted the incident, I absorbed their words, but my frustration grew when I realized they were unfairly placing blame on her for the situation. How is this her fault when it was a hit from behind!! Everyone must be crazy. And Hope was actually trying to compensate. I was surprised when that person also mentioned that she had already reached out to her insurance provider to settle the costs of the damage. It may not have been a long time since we met, but I still do know her. I cannot just stand by and let her get scammed. "Hope.," I called out, catching her attention as she turned her head, a look of confusion crossing her face. "Babe! What are you doing here? I told you it was not that big of a deal." She made her way towards me, acted as if she was going to hug me, but instead, she leaned in close just so she can whispered in my ear. "I called the police. Just play along until they're here." I discreetly scanned my surroundings, ensuring I didn't give away my intentions. The man's fearful expression caught my eye, undoubtedly intimidated by my mere presence. I knew I had to quickly put his mind at ease and convince him that I was not a threat, before he decides to run. "Hi bro. Sorry for the inconvenience. My girlfriend changes her cars every other day and that's why she can't get used to them quickly. Babe, just go ahead and pay him already. We are late for our trip to Dubai." I came dangerously close to sabotaging her strategy, and I have to hand it to her, it was an impressively cunning plan. "It's okay, this plane belongs to me anyway, so it can wait. This is more important. I have to make it up to him." "How much are you going to pay him?" I asked in a slightly louder tone as I observed everyone leaning in a bit closer, eager to catch her response. "I might just give him a cheque so he can pen down whatever amount he feels like. Because this car is already damaged. It's only fair that I pay for a new one." This guy's face lit up with sheer delight as he pondered his victorious case. Surely, he must have been overjoyed upon hearing our conversation, probably reveling in our perceived stupidity. Well, in the end, we actually got to see someone get arrested because of their stupidity. And it sure wasn't us.
