Chapter 2: The Battle for the Bed

1086 Words
Valentina found her designated suite easily enough. It was vast, located at the end of the long upper corridor, and decorated in the same imposing style as the rest of the estate: dark woods, heavy velvet drapes, and a chilling sense of history. The connecting door to Dante’s quarters was solid oak, thick and unforgiving. She stared at it, imagining the abyss on the other side. A maid had already been dispatched. She helped Valentina shed the suffocating layers of the wedding gown—the white silk falling to the floor like a defeated flag. As the gown came off, the relief was palpable, but the freedom was illusionary. "Signora, Don Volkov requested that you wear this." The maid presented a garment with hesitant reverence. It wasn't a nightgown. It was a slip made of sheer, clinging black lace, designed less for sleep and more for display. Valentina knew immediately it was a calculated move—a silent demand for submission. "Thank you," Valentina said, taking the garment. She waited until the maid had left, closing the door softly behind her. She looked at the black lace in her hand. Wearing it meant accepting his terms. Refusing to wear it meant immediate, direct confrontation, a battle she was perhaps too weary to fight right now. I will not give him the satisfaction of submission. She tossed the lace onto the sofa and walked into the lavish, marble bathroom. She needed the sting of cold water to wash away the oppressive scent of the church and the terrifying trace of Dante’s cologne. After scrubbing her skin until it was slightly pink, she found a simple, white silk robe provided in the guest amenities. It was modest, long-sleeved, and covered everything. If Dante wanted a show, he would not get it. She tied the robe tightly at her waist, walked back into the room, and sat on the edge of the enormous, silk-canopied bed. She wrapped her arms around herself, listening to the silence, the silence that felt charged with a ticking clock. It was almost midnight. Will he come for me now? Will he wait? Just as the thought crossed her mind, the lock on the connecting door clicked, a stark, metallic sound that echoed in the quiet room. Valentina sprang to her feet, instinctively backing away from the door, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. Dante Volkov stepped through the doorway. He had changed out of his formal suit, but he was no less imposing. He wore only black trousers, their sharp crease unforgiving against his hips. His chest was bare, a dark, dangerous landscape of muscle and old, faint scars—proof that the power he wielded had been earned with violence. He didn't speak. He simply filled the space, moving with a predator’s slow, deliberate economy. His eyes, colder than ever, immediately registered her choice of attire. "You are not wearing what was provided," he stated, his voice a low, rough rumble. It wasn't a question. It was the identification of a slight. "I chose to wear this," Valentina retorted, refusing to back down. Her voice wobbled slightly, but she steadied it instantly. Dante took another step, closing the distance between them. "That was not a request, Valentina. It was the first rule." "The rules of this contract were signed by our fathers, Don Volkov. They did not include my wardrobe." He stopped directly in front of her, his shadow enveloping her completely. The air between them suddenly crackled, hot and thick. She could smell the faint scent of expensive bourbon and his own clean, masculine musk. The difference in their size was overwhelming, a physical reminder of her entrapment. "Everything is included, mia moglie," he said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. He reached out and wrapped his large hand around the belt of her robe. Without a word of warning, he pulled. The knot was tight, but his strength was absolute. The silk groaned and gave way, the robe falling open down the length of her body, exposing the simple white chemise she wore beneath. It was less revealing than the lace, but the forceful action felt utterly violating. Valentina gasped, not in fear, but in pure, white-hot fury. "You have no right!" "I have every right," Dante countered, his eyes dark, fixed on the pulse hammering wildly at the base of her throat. "I have the contract, Valentina. I have your name, your debt, and your body." He reached out again, this time cupping the back of her head, his fingers tangling in her damp hair. He didn't pull her closer, but held her fast, making escape impossible. "Look at me," he commanded. Her gaze snapped up to meet his. Her heart was pounding against her ribs, a wild bird fighting a cage. "You hate me," he observed, the lack of inflection making the statement colder than any shout. "Good. Hatred keeps you honest. It keeps you interesting. But I will teach you that in this house, when I command you to kneel, you kneel. When I command you to submit, you submit." He lowered his head, and this time, the kiss was not a public statement of ownership. It was a raw, primal claim. It was punishing and deep, meant to annihilate her resistance. He devoured her mouth, forcing her lips apart, tasting her defiance and demanding more. Valentina couldn't breathe. She tried to push him away, shoving her hands against the steel wall of his chest, but he was immovable. The power of him—the sheer, unchecked force of his desire—was overwhelming, terrifying, and in a deeply shamed corner of her mind, thrilling. She tried to bite back, but he merely deepened the kiss, using his dominant strength until her struggle became a dizzying, breathless gasp. Her hands clenched, then weakened, clinging instead to his bare shoulders for balance. When he finally tore his mouth away, both of them were breathing hard, their chests heaving. "The contract is clear," he grated out, his eyes black and molten. "The transaction is complete. You are my wife. And this night is mine." He grabbed her hand, bringing it to his mouth, and bit down, hard, on the sensitive flesh of her wrist. It was a sharp, brief sting—a symbolic mark of possession that left a white impression where his teeth had been. "Now," he said, throwing her hand down and stepping back toward the bed, "Show me how much you hate being owned."
