Chapter EighteenAlan was the first to awaken the following morning. He looked across the bed towards where Agnes was lying. Her eyes were closed and she was breathing evenly. She was still asleep. Last night, when she suggested they should both stay in a hotel somewhere else in the city, he had hardly been able to believe it; that was the last thing he had expected to hear. But she had meant it and, once Ben arrived on the scene, it had been her who gave him the instructions. “I'm sure you will know of a hotel with a room to spare – despite the racing season.” To his credit, Ben hadn't batted an eyelid.
