However, today had been exceptionally busy at the Newcastle Police Station. First, there was the photograph of a woman said to have ordered the set of cufflinks and tiepin found at the crime scene. Then a couple had come forward and, after having seen both victims, they identified one of them as their son. During the initial interview with Mr and Mrs Patterson, they stated that John had no birthmarks or tattoos. Therefore, it had been necessary to warn the parents that they might need to view two bodies; something Alan had hoped to avoid.
