Chapter Forty-SixDownstairs in reception, the stage was set. The two uniformed officers had entered the hotel through the staff entrance to avoid being spotted through the mirrors in reception. They were now in the manager's officer with the DCI and Sergeant Andrews, waiting for Mr Jenkins to escort Joe Barnes in there under some pretext or other. Meanwhile, Morris had been told to hover around reception in case Barnes decided to make a run for it. Nevertheless, when the manager walked into his office, he was alone. “He's gone!” Jenkins said. “They've both gone.” “What the hell are you talking about?” Alan yelled. “Gone?
